Can anyone recommend me a good gel / hairspray / wax which I can use on my horses mane to plait it? Basically I have to plait him up at the weekend but he's grey... his mane was SO filthy I washed it yesterday thinking it'd then be not-too-slippy to plait on Fri night, however he's already rolled in mud so its dark brown again! Will HAVE to wash it again probably on Fri morning so desperately need something sticky to use (he has a VERY spikey mane as it is...). Ideally something-human I can get from the supermarket ;)

The best stuff to use is whisked egg whites - far far cheaper than anything else and 1 small egg does the entire mane of a horse with a huge bog brush mane. Brilliant - it gives you plenty of grip to actually hold on to the mane as you plait and sets almost solid so the plaits all stay in really well.£1 for half a dozen free range eggs - which will do 6 complete sets of plaits. And no it doesn't smell at all and it certainly does not attract flies

I found that one of 'Uncle Joe's hanging balls' worked well on mine! Haha. I stupidly put one up the night before a show and the moring after she was full of sticky molasses all over her freshly washed mane, face and forelock. it was a nighmare to get out but i found it made her mane easier to plait! Tee hee!!:D xxx

Lynn russell's quikplait which costs about a tenner, or granny style setting lotion from the chemists which seems to be the same thing at a fraction of the price. Gives you plenty of grip on freshly washed mane (I've got no choice, he's grey)

I use Dax Wax and then put tights over and band them on each plait to glue all the sticky out bits in

Quikbraid all the way.

I'd stay away from hairpsray as it looks awful IMO and attracts any dust like a magnet.

I just use value hair gel. Sticks it well without looking like you have used a load of gloop, sorts the spiky bits, gives you some grip, and then brushes out. oh, and is super cheap for a big pot!

Dirt cheap setting lotion - Wilko's sell it for about 79p!

If you have to wash the mane first - do it in washing up liquid - takes the grease out without making the hair slippery
