Didnt know quite where to post this so I put it in Vet. as well.

I have noticed my 13yr old NF geldings back end seems a bit stiff when long reining/lunging.

He is out 24/7 and I make sure I warm him up properly before and he does loosen up towards the end of the session. He is overweight and the weight is coming off.

He got a bit of rain scald on his loins just before easter which cleared up nicely, but I noticed that he tensed slightly when I ran my hand (fairly firmly) across this area.

Here's my question: Could this be remaining sensitivity from having rain scald, or do you think its sore back muscles and its just a coincidence that the two problems are in the same place? Could the rain scald have caused the stiffness?

Thank you for reading!!

Don't know if it would be down to the rain scald although if he's been holding himself funny because he is sore he may have pulled something. Probably beat to ask your physio to take a look

When the back man came out for a check up, he found my boy had something wrong with the muscles in his hindquarters. He had been carrying himself funny, and apparently he was in quite a lot of pain. He's been much better since. Maybe worth checking just in case.

Suggest getting a qualified physio out. Does he track up well and work well from behind? Does he look 'shuffly' or short-striding with back legs? Also does the stiffness improve after a few minute's work?
When you walk and trot him in hand in a line on hard ground are there any signs of irregularity? Or any strange movement, i.e. taking back legs inward then throwing them out, so not straight movement?
So many questions, sorry!!
