Hello

I am just looking for some advice. I have had my horse for over 8 years and he has been stabled every single night. Recently when he comes out of the stable in the morning (or when stood for a long period of time) he appears stiff in his off hind leg. Once he has walked a few strides he is fine again and not lame and is happy to work as usual. This happened once last year and disappeared after the physic had seen him and said he had tight hamstrings. I am worried as it has now happened again and I am hoping it isn't anything too serious. He competes regularly and is very happy in his work but just has this stiffness coming out of the stable. Has anyone else had an experience of this or any ideas?

Thank you :)

It could be the start of arthritis, if it's possible I'd try to keep him out 24/7, it's far better for joints to keep them gently moving.

It could well be the start of bone spavin.
Much can be done now to slow the progress of such conditions I would consult your vet .

He can't live out 24/7 he is a very docile competition horse and lacks energy when he lives out. Do you think it would be wise to put him on a joint supplement?

Bone Spavin? What can be done now to help this please? I will give the vet a call tomorrow. He has just been to Aachen and was fine in Aachen and passed the vet check to travel there. Thank you in advance.

Lots can be done from special shoeing to various forms of drug therapy , and joint fusing it depends on what's going on .
The first thing to do is to get a vet to do a work up and try to identify where the stiffness comes from.
If a horse appears stiff on one leg it's always best to check it out sooner rather than later even if it wears off with movement .

It happened about a year ago and then stopped after he had sports massage, they said it was tight hamstrings.

Perhaps it is but who knows it could be many things until you have had some diagnostic help from an expert you are guessing .
a masseur canot diagnose anything .
Hamstrings can be tight for many reasons they often tight secondary to an other issue .
