Hi all,

My 11 yo mare has been showing some stiffness/mild lameness through her shoulder. She has had it a couple of years but it is a bit intermittent. If we are hacking out, it never occurs, even trotting on the roads she is fine. Schooling on a surface she is fine. At our yard we have a school with no surface, just flat ground which is quite firm. Some days she is 'Lame' and other days not. I had a pootle on Monday and she was fine, we did mostly stretching and circles in walk, Tues i lunged, large 20m circle no canter. Last night i came to school and the ground was a bit softer after the rain and she was 'lame'.
Its her left fore and only occurs on the right rein, it is worse on tighter circles and she finds it hard to bend well on the right rein.
before i go down the bute route, i was reading about equimins flexijoint and thought about trying that...
what are your thoughts....any other suppliments you would reccomend?

Thanks!

I would consider not trotting on roads, not using the surface she is lame on for anything other than walking, it sounds too hard for any faster work and especially lunging.

Have you had the vet ? Just so you can establish where the lameness is coming from

I use equimins flexi joint on my 33 year old with great success but he is also on danilon, we'll see when the ground gets hard in the summer, he's usually ok during the winter or when the ground is softer.

11 is quite young to be suffering with arthritis, so I'd get the vet to check her out if I were you.

I would also get a vet to check your horse out, often they look lame in the shoulder as they are trying to move differently due to pain elsewhere.

Have you had a diagnosis from your vet because if not it could be something other than her shoulder.
If vet is happy to refer a treatment from a physio may be more help as they can get the muscles in the area working better to support her, if she is only lame on circles I would think there is a possibility she could be helped.
