I need help!!
ok so basically
i have this mare which i am considering to buy and she's amazing in every single way...
problem is... she's stiff on her hind legs!! any reason's why?? the strange thing is, is that after i warm her up she's fine...
i thought it was because she's an ex-racer the muscles have stiffened because she is not doing the same amount of work she was once used to..
but i'm no vet...
any ideas on what it could be??
thanks! :)

not sure maybe due to the weather? Have known an ex racer who had very stiff back legs and after a couple of shiatsu sessions, has been back to 100% :) hope that helps!

Is she stiff because she is stabled all the time? How is her back leg conformation?
I use to look after an exracer that twisted his hocks outwards when he walked he is now 14 yrs old and has had injections in his hocks but it hasnt made much difference, he is now retired but did event upto intermediate level.
Personally if you really like her I would get her vetted, mention to the vet about her hocks and possibly get them xrayed.
I like exracer but it depends how hard they were trained and from what age. If they were stabled most of the time from an early age and possibly in training from 3 yrs they get a lot of hammer on the joints before they are fully developed.
I knew a horse retired at the age of 8 with arthritis in his hocks he wasn't hammered, he did upto novice eventing but his hock confornation was rubbish.

Suspensory desmitis.
Hock spavin.
Sacroiliac joint injury.
OCD of the stifles.
To name only four of a long list.

All possibles in a 6 year old ex racer. More than one can "wear off" with exercise as they warm up. All potentially bad news. Do not buy this mare unless she is being given away and you can face future vet bills and heartache. There are a hundred mares just like her going for peanuts who do not already have stiffness issues.

ps vicky it's worse than that :o, they break many of them at 18 months and put them in full training at two.

QR i wouldn't buy any 6yro that was stiff to start with as what will she be like in 3-5 years?

way too big a risk, particularly when they are giving away ex-racers at the moment.

Totally agree with this. Wouldn't even go there sorry

dont buy it and consider yourself lucky you realised before you did.
Exracers seem to attract vets for things you will have never considered possible without buying one with a potentially serious problem which will probably end up costing you a fortune.

(speaking from experience)
