Got my 5 yr old TB mare in from field yesterday evening, she walked in almost crab like but my first thought was she was cowering from the wind and rain (as she can be very wimpy in bad weather)
But this morning I went to get her out of her box and she was reluctant to move at first, then when she did was hopping on her left hind.
I couldn't see or feel anything - she would stand on it - but trying to move her she wasn't happy, though did seem a little easier after a few more steps.
Left her in and gave her a bute, vet came out this evening. She couldn't see or feel anything either.
Walked her around the yard, still lame but better than the morning. Vet checked hoof, moved leg back and forth (No negative response) but after this she walked more lame again
Vet wanted to carry out rectal exam to check the pelvis wasn't fractured, pelvis seemed ok.
She also took bloods to rule out tying up (they have just come back as all normal)
Vet agrees it seems to be stifle area, like a locking stifle possibly caused by being an idiot in the field, slipping etc.
Going to box rest and one bute twice a day, vet back Wednesday to check.
Has anyone else had anything similar and what did it turn out to be?
Thankyou :)

I am in exactly the same position with my 6yr old tb.

She was hopping lame initially and was a nightmare to examine she was so uncomfortable. lameness settled very quickly but 5 weeks on and she still isn't right. Tried to canter down the field tonight and she was very stiff behind. Vet is coming on monday anyway so Im hoping for an answer then.

Hi thanks for the reply, my mare was fine to be examined she let her move her leg around no problem but it did make her more uncomfortable after
However this morning she is moving around her box like normal, it's very strange I'm wondering if she put something out and it's rectified itself as she was barely able to walk yesterday and only had one bute last night - anyway I'm keeping her on box rest til vet back to be sure - fingers crossed for your horse x

Thank you. Im begining to get really quite worried about my girl.

Like yours, mine seems to have on/off. Today she is stiff. She got quite cold yesterday and i imagine that hasnt helped.

Ive just hand grazed her as she's walking as normal, all very odd will see how she is tomorrow and perhaps put her in a small paddock see how she goes ...
