Have had the vet to Hazel she has stifle lameness that they want to treat conservatively initially but at approaching 26 I need to have some idea of prognosis. We believe it to be an injury due to twisting but the next step will be scans and xrays so what next. Recommended rest but does it need to be in a small area or is ambling around a 30x10 meter pen okay and bute so need to stop her boswellia I believe. She cannot be stabled as will not tolerate it for any length of time since a long spell on box rest she will jump out

Sorry to hear about your horse.

Vets will consider the horses issues (phycological as well as physical) where periods of box rest are recommended. Mine needed to go on box rest a few times for various problems but because she was arthritic she was considered better to be turned out, it was the lesser of the two evils.

When she did her check ligament in, she was box rested for three months, there was no choice given. I was extremely sceptical and said that I didn't think I was prepared to put her through it and at that point actually contemplated pts but I decided I would give it a go. I thought she would stiffen up really badly but as her arthritis had always been treated and was controlled very well, she actually appeared to not just box rest, but actually seemed to thrive on it.
