I have a 16.1hh irish sport horse mare used for dressage, autumn last year she progressively became lame, and after several visits from the vet it was shown she had damaged part of a ligament in her stifle.

Following this she went to Newmarket for an operation and has been on walking therapy since. She is currently living out during the day..and is ridden in walk everyday for half an hour, she is now sound in walk.

I am going to begin trotting soon, and was wondering if anyone has any experience in ligament injurys to see the chances of her staying sound in trot..and possibly (fingers crossed) returning back to work.

Thank you

Hi CazzieEm,

Welcome to the forum!

Do you know what ligament your mare has injured?

I haven't got a positive story im afraid

My pony injured her cruciate ligament 2 years ago and is getting progressively worse. She has arthritic changes and can't flex (like when i pick out her feet) without being very reluctant to put weight on it again. She is very lame in trot and slightly lame in walk. She is 24 years old so is retired now and is happily spending her days eating as much as she can in the field!

Good luck with your mare, when i posted about this last year i had a few promicing responces so hopefully you will be ok

In a very short version of my pony's story, he injured his meniscus ligament in the stifle, 2 yrs ago, the old owners weren't keen to operate, but I was prepared to just give him time off...2 yrs field rest later he is now in light work hacking only, but I trot him up every time I ride and he can vary between 1/10 lame and 3/10 lame, obviously I don't ride him when he is the latter, the vet who was dealing with him has also had cases who've had the op and they have actually had less success, but again that is something we don't know fro sure if they would've been any better had they not had the operation.

Good luck with yours Hope she makes a good recovery.

thanks for your help!! the vet is coming out to see her on friday...which is judgement day for her really...if she doesnt trot up fully sound...she is going off to stud to be a broodmare as she is too highy strung to just potter round a field with a retired cob which she is doing now...shes the type of horse tht needs something to do and think about...as shes going abit loopy at the moment...so the vet thinks that going to stud may hopefully occupy her a little!!
I shall let you know how she gets on! fingers crossed as shes a little star!
