This morning, we took both the dobbins out for a hack. The weather is great and my OH's mare is just getting over a bout of lameness caused my and old kick injury.

We have to ride up a road, through a village to get to and from the woods, it's a very horsey area so people are pretty used to seeing horses plonking along and most riders are pretty hot on waving traffic on and saying thanks, including us.

Coming home, we waved a few cars past and as we were approaching a little traffic calming chicane, riding single file, a couple of cars came past, the last one of which had its sun roof open, most drivers wave 'thanks' but the character with the sun roof gave us the bird! This immediately made me cross, as there was no need for it, we had not held him up and were doing our best to keep out of the way. So as the traffic was moving slowly, I pushed on into a trot, the car was then forced to stop at the chicane and I was catching up fast. The guy in the car saw me coming, and started to squirm, he tried to move forward, but with another car in front and a bus half way through the chicane, he was going nowhere.

I was just getting to shouting distance and the b'stard managed to get free of the jam...B*GGER, I was really looking forward to having a 'chat' about his gesticulation, and as I am 6' 1" tall and male and a retired Martial Arts instructor, I felt I had the upper hand.

So, the ignorant s*d got off...or so I thought.

A few minutes later a friend and her daughter who own the field next to ours came riding up the hill we were riding down. She had encountered the same man, who had told her that riding two abreast was selfish and illegal. Now if I can be tall and threatening, Emma is tiny and a real firecracker, he picked a fight with the wrong one there, and as he was stuck in yet another hold up, he came off much the worse

I am still angry at his actions and the fact that I did not get the chance to 'discuss' the appropriate way to acknowledge riders waving the traffic past
mad.gif
But at least he did not get off scott free

drivers like this really annoy me. i got run over a couple of years ago by a stupid woman who was trying to squeeze thru a teeny gap next to my horse. has made me really nervous about hacking out and i will only go on the roads with a friend and riding 2 abreast- its the only way to slow them down i find! still nearly go run over again the other day by a silly cow trying to squeeze past when i'd specifically stuck my hand up to ask her to wait....

My horses are all 17hh+ and take up a lot of space on the road - I have a tendency to ride in the middle of the left hand lane - partic when riding and leading - amazing how many people get intimidated and slow down - then I pull over to the side and say thank you with a nice smile. Never had any hassle - think I've been lucky!

Nothing to do with luck! Even the STUPIDEST motorist recognises a HUGE horse - and can visualise what will happen if it lands on them!
grin.gif
My stallion NEVER has problems on the road - even the d**kheads from the local shoot pull their Range Rovers to the side of the road and turn them off!! He's 17hh + and built like the proverbial brick outhouse!! (He's also bombproof in traffic - but THEY don't know that!)

The same idiots will hurtle past a 16.1 breaker despite ALL efforts to slow them down. One day had a nervous breaker hedged in by a sensible companion - waved at a motorist to slow down. He did - for just long enough to shriek "If you'd ride single file I wouldn't HAVE to slow down!"

Dont get me started on arshole drivers
mad.gif
, but dont you just love it when they suddenly realise it's not some 14 year old girl they can bully, but turns out be a bloke that bites back

We were riding single file down the main road once between the entrance of the bridleway and our lane, not holding any traffic up as it was a wide single carriage way each way, leading into a dual carriageway just past the turn for our lane. One driver had his passenger side window down and shouted obscenities (sp) out the window as he went by, the 15yo girl who was on my pony infront of me gave him the bird in return, he stopped in the main road and started shouting at her, so I pulled between him and her on my horse has she was a juvenile and he was an adult and he was giving me the full horses shouldn't be on the road etc etc etc and I just kept telling him to go and learn his highway code and that is all I would say to him repeatedly anyway he was getting more and more wound up and I was stood by his passenger side mirror and he decided to do the biggest wheel spin i've seen away as he drove off and my horse gae him the best reply possible... as he looked back in his rear view mirror and that was his very best Vicky Pollard 'bovvered' face! He's a star the only thingsd that spook him are crisp bags and bin liners, so some loon doing wheel spins didn't even turn a hair on his body!

These idiots are so desperate to get places that second faster that they just don't seem to care if they injure or kill a horse/rider on their way! A month or 2 ago I was hacking down a country lane (wide enough for 1 car) with my friend and the horses were already a little bit on edge with the rain/wind and a little daewood matiz decided they couldn't wait 30 seconds for us to pull into a layby. I hear my friends horse behind panicing as the car brushes her leg so car speeds up. I see it and think ok trying to get away from the panicking horse they will allow me time to pull over NO! Proceeds faster past me as I feel my horse turning his back end and next thing I hear BOOM! My lad has kicked the car as it tried to squeeze past us. Im trying to calm my lad down as my friend comes up behind telling me not to worry and she'll handle it (very feisty lady!) as the car begins to break. Well the driver had obviously decided they didn't want to confront 2 aggrivated animals and drove off! Very lucky neither horses were injured but unfortunately this wasn't the last bad encounter I've had with a vehicle. That was on thursday

My stallion had a similar effect when we used to take him hacking before he retired but because he used to go along the road bouncing and shrieking in his best macho stallion voice! Completely under control, never pulled just liked to bounce and if you had to stop he would literally trot slowly on the spot till you were ready to move off again! He was just excited about going hacking, as soon as he'd got on the bridleway and had his first canter he would walk and be quiet... but it was very amusing watching the whole A40 in Denham come to stand still because of this 17h stallion who appeared to be a loud lunatic, no one ever complained and he would usually be heading a ride where a couple of mares were following him out

As much as I like watching top gear and enjoy Clarkson and company, I do think it encourages certain drivers to act like total dickheads, I had a go at a couple of blokes who although I wasn't on the road, I was so annoyed at the ridiculous speed they were going on a narrow 30mph road next to a childrens play area with parents putting a kiddy and pushchair into car, I rode over and remonstrated, to which their reply was (said in a south african accent) "we testing for top gear" to which I thought top twat more like, they obvioulsly couldn't give a toss about anyone else but themselves, until motorists realise the roads are a public highway to get from A to B and not a racetrack to try out their Renault Clit 2000bhp penis replacement, or Toyota Anus noisyshite Breast augment 5000, then the roads are just going to get worse.

i know this is a serious topic but HILARIOUS!!! ROFLMAO!

Can someone quote me the highway code act that allows us to ride two abreast.
My mare booted a car for pushing her into barbed wire and I often ride two abreast to prevent similiar happening again.Im fed up with motorists gesticulating single file when its done with regards to everyones safety. They will squeeze past on blind bends just so they dont have to slow down.
Something needs to be done

You should never wave a car on to pass you, with insurers if there is an acident it will be YOU that is at fault.

This guy was in his late 40's balding with grey hair and he was driving an oldish nondescript Japanese family saloon. He obviously thought he was being "BIG", safe in the knowledge that we could not do anything to reciprocate. His body language when he saw me and H trotting towards the back of his car, fast, was a picture. I am just cross, because another 30 seconds and I would have had the b*gger.

If the road had been quiet and we had held him up, he may have had cause to be disgruntled, but on a sunny Saturday, horses and riders are NOT the slowest things in this busy little village, as was demonstrated when he got stopped at the chicane.

I have his car imprinted in my memory, I hope for his sake he does not use that road on a regular basis, as when I'm not on horseback, I drive a car, a big 4x4...with BULL BARS

Rule 53 Before riding off or turning, look behind you to make sure it is safe, then give a clear arm signal.
When riding on the road you should
• Keep to the left
• Keep both hands on the reins unless you are signalling
• Keep both feet in the stirrups
• Not carry another person
• Not carry anything which might affect your balance or get tangled up with the reins
• Keep a horse you are leading to your left
• Move in the direction of the traffic flow in a one-way street
Never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends.

BHS did try to get that last sentence changed as must admit I feel safer 2 abreast on a busy road--as lots of posters have said it does slow traffic down

lmao, well said!!!

and as bit Cuffey quoted from the highway code states SHOULD, not MUST so it is only advisory not a nessesity.

we had a car once get so close to the mare i was ridings rear end that you could hear her tail on his front grille, luckily she is a bombproof driving pony & diddnt batt an eyelid (she did however get her revenge by releaving herself onto his bonnet
grin.gif
)

bad i know but i now ride out with pea gravel on my pockets & a metal buttoned schooling whip, small handfull of pea gravel gets tossed back at speeding cars windows & if that fails then i drop my schooling whip so i am carrying it by its tail & smack the wingmirror or side of car with it. ME!! A COW!! NO!!!
wink.gif

Ive just found rule 215 that allows you to ride two abreast with young chidren or young nervous horses.Thats the one that could be quoted re safety aspect.

today at half 6 needed to put annie out into the field which u have to go on the main road to get to. Now because i have just had an op my dad had to lead her as is 4year old and very nervous after a near miss. so there was me and another girl slowing traffic plus a car driven by my brother to help slow cars down. as we r going up sumone got fed up with waiting for a minute and tried over taking very fast to which my brother pulled out and blocked the road he said very choice words and was going to pull over then he saw size of my brother and thoutgh better
smile.gif
just shows theyd rather pick a fight with young girls then pick on a very built lad cowards

I know its a different subject but a porter at the local hospital got killed in the car park by a speeding driver this week.....

unfortunatley it just goes to show there are tossers behind the wheel of a car everywhere these days.

[/ QUOTE ]

And the person who was driving will probably get an 18 month suspended sentence, 100 hours community service and a darn good telling off.

If I wanted to commit murder, I'd do it with a car!

Someone local to us had a car come up behind them, and get so close the bonnet touched the horses legs. The horse moved back and ended up sitting on the bonnet of the car! 600kg, vs car bonnet, guess which one lost!
