My ex racer mare is 4 weeks post ulcer treatment. She had 4 omeprazole injections. I will be booking her in this week for re-scope.
Although her appetite and general demeanor is much, much better, she is still a witch to tack up and also rug. She will even react to just putting a saddle pad on her back. I would have hoped I'd see some difference by now if the ulcers were the cause of the grumpiness..
I'm going to get a physio out to check her next. Teeth are being done next week. Saddle was fitted in January and being re-checked this month.
Once the saddle is on, she's fine. Doesn't like the girth being adjusted from the ground, fine if you do it in the saddle. She's lovely to ride (so far, I haven't had her long and we've had our fair share of problems along the way, so we haven't done loads). I popped her saddle on last night, after not trying since she was first scoped, she was upset, trying to bite and kick, however is easily distracted by carrots. I led her around gently, let her pick at some grass, walked and trotted in hand (less than five minutes). And she was lovely, wouldn't know she had it on, non reactive.
Anyone had a similar experience? Could this be anticipation of pain? Maybe she needs more omeprazole, we'll see on re-scope. I'm very worried there's something else wrong, perhaps skeletally, but the last vet to see her didn't think so. I will bring it up again when they come to re-scope. I'm super conscious of how much my insurance will go up following ulcer treatment and although I'd never skip anything she needed, I am worried about how much this will all cost. I was naive in thinking my freebie was actually "free"

I'm starting to feel disheartened. I adore her and I just want her to be happy. I've had some people say some horses just stay reactive like this, but I don't feel comfortable brushing it off as this is just what she's like.
