We did a xc ride with lots of jumping on 7th Oct and my OH horse was not 100% the next day. He seemed happy enough but was unsound on trot up and was standing with the off fore pointing forwards (but with full weight on it) we kept him in for 3 days, no swelling or heat inc hoof and he became very nearly sound in a straight line but still lame on a lunged circle so we went to the vets for a workup on the Friday (12th) He felt the horse was only 1/10th lame and nerve blocked the hoof. He then came sound so the vet looked further at the hoof and found the frog has a very deep cleft in it (a hoofpick only just reaches the bottom) and seemed infected so he trimmed it, cleaned it out and for our piece of mind ,did full hoof xrays on both front feet, thankfully they are 100% clear with no lurking nastys! we are continuing to treat with a wash out of the cleft twice a day with Hydrogen Peroxide, once a day with a formaldehyde mixture to harden the soft frog tissue. He is in at night and out during the day with an equiboot and is still standing with the off fore extended and still not quite sound- are we being impatient or has anyone any thoughts on this? Thanks

Are you sure you havent got my horse?

I'm currently going through practically exactly the same thing. I was convinced that it was an abscess but the vet has dug round and I have poulticed to no effect.
My farrier is always moaning that my horse has a deep central cleft in his frog and that he has thrush. I have been treating it with all sorts of nastys, even though I cant see any sign of thrush. I asked the vet and she doesnt think he's got thrush, says its just how his feet are. So I have stopped that, as formedelhyde will kill off the 'good' tissue as well.
I'm hoping mine might be deep bruising now, rather than anything more sinister like damage to pedal bone/tendon/ or ligaments in his foot. Unfortunately, very often these things just take time

I agree, its well worth getting some xray plates for piece of mind- thats why we took our boy into the surgery to get both fronts done (its not that expensive done in house) even though the vet didnt think it was strictly necessary so we could be reassured there wasnt an underlying nasty like navicular etc. BTW he is still improving- probably 95% sound now- the farrier is coming on Monday to see if he can find anything...

I have had my farrier back out now and also done some research on the net. The farrier says mine is definitely chronic thrush, deep inside the cleft of the frog. I have looked on the net, heres the link http://www.healthyhoof.com/articles/Thrush/Thrush.html

And I am now convinced my farrier is right. Have a look at this page but I must say your horses symptoms sounds very similar to mine. Mine is also nearly sound now but I'm treating for thrush. I'm not using Formadelhyde as it kills off the good/healthy tissue as well. Last night I soaked my boys foot in diluted Milton sterilising fluid but my farrier recommends something they use for treating cattle, which I cant remember the name of
