Has anyone had their horse thoroughly checked for lameness with no answers? I am starting to get a bit anxious after 3 days of tests with nothing to report.

My horse was initially 1/10ths lame trotting up 4 weeks ago after noticing her felt a bit ‘off’. After a few days rest with no improvement we called the vet out. He wasn’t too concerned and said we should continue and contact again if any concerns. Horse felt fine on the flat so continued as normal.

A week later the lameness was noticeable on a circle (about 3/10ths). I called the vet called out and he agreed that the horse had got worse and ran nerve blocks and x-rays to explore. The blocks localised the lameness to the lower limb with a plamar digital and an abaxial sesamoid bone nerve block resolving the lameness completely. The Hock and coffin joints were xrayed with no abnormalities.

An MRI was recommended as well as further blocks, including pastern joint block to see which part of the foot is in pain. I kept horse on box rest for the next two weeks until now. He has actually worsened after rest and now 5/10th's lame on the circle.

Sent to hospital - The blocks have been performed (pastern) and negative - still lame on trot up and 5/10ths lame on the circle. The MRI has also been perfomed.

After thinking the MRI would tell us a lot it has showed nothing – no abnormalities at all.

Its become very frustrating for all involved – last block today of the and navicular bursa (spelling??) but have the feeling I am not going to have any answers for such a lame horse as not sure how much more they can block!

Has anyone had any experience with a lame horse with no explanations after such thorough testing? I enjoyed watching therm perform the tests on the first day as I could take the info in - now I am sittign in an office stewing!

OP it's not clear what was MRId - has the proximal suspensory been scanned?

Do I understand right that he blocks sound to the back half of the foot? Can I suggest you get a second opinion on the MRI scan, as a horse I know was said by Leahurst to have nothing significant on MRI yet a second opinion found collateral ligament strain. I understand that the scans aren't easy to interpret.

How long has the horse been lame? I know of one which was lame for two months on and off before a very deep seated abscess burst at the heel. They don't always show on x ray.
I hope you find an answer soon.

I shudder to think of how much it cost! Was the problem resolved?

It turned out to be severe damage to a collateral ligament, the scan didn't show it up. This was in 2005.
It cost us about £5k in the end after all investigations. Horse never came sound enough to sustain any work, but was a field ornament until we lost him last year.

Probably way way off but there have been lots of undiagnosed lameness issues that have gone on for weeks, tests done etc, and they have turned out to be a brewing abcess. Is that a possibility if scans etc arnt showing anything? I hope you get it resolved x
