so continuing from my ill horse post, he's still ill. had the vet out last week and he had a 5 day course of antibiotics, 2 a day. so on saturday he was still very weezy and mucus was still being produced at an alarming rate. Went up the yard early sunday and he had not touched his hay or his tea, so gave him his breakfast and he didnt touch it either. so i turned him out and for 2 hours he stood in the same spot not eating, so thought be best to bring him in (even though the fresh air might of been better) standing in mud all day cant be doing him much good either. left him with 3 haynets and asked friend to put tea in. got a text last night to say he was fine, so went this morn and he hadnt touched his tea, his breakfast or his hay, so called the vet out. so he came out this morn and says that the infection is still on his chest and nasal discharge, has a temp of 35 and a slighlty enlarged submandibular lymph node. the vet wants to come out again tomorrow to inject the antibiotics. is anybody's else horse like this and how long did they take to over come it, little worried about the lack of food consumption at the mo. this had been 2 weeks now. sorry to go on!!

I know someone whose horse has come down with something like this. The vets had no idea what it was and the horse eventually perked up and started to eat a little.
Fingers crossed for you

Well you're doing all you can to help him at the moment, the vets are involved so hopefully by injecting the antibiotics it should go straight into his system & sort him out. I can understand you being worried though.

There are several on the yard that have this to varying degrees. Some have it on their chest & some just in their nasal passages. I expect we'll never know exactly what it is but I have little doubt that it will all clear up & Flint will be fine. Keep your chin up.

i dont think it is, or the vets have not mentioned it either, but thanks for the warning, i hadnt heard it was about this area again. he hasn't been anywhere to pick any virus up etv, i dont know if its just one of those infections he's picked up and has nto been able to shake off with the 1st batch of antibiotics, but what with not eating now i think the vets think its best to come out and inject them into him daily

Have you tried putting molasses in a warm bran mash to tempt him? When my old horse was ill and didn't eat or drink for days I did manage to get littlre titbits down him like apple pieces and chopped up carrots. He did get better but it took a while. Also the vet left me with the injections of antibiotic to give him. Cuts down on your bill if the vet isn't coming out daily. Hope he is soon on the road to recovery.

ok so a little break through this eve, he ate half of his tea, but wouldnt touch hay at all. he's looking rather lean at the moment (its a diet i wont be trying!) so fingers crossed for tomorrow!

thanks for the comments

No words of wisdom here, except to say I really hope he starts to pick up soon, you must be very worried.

Get well (((((hugs))))) to you both
