stirrup leathers pinching

Anyone else have this prob? When I put my stirrups up to hunting length I find they tend to pinch my calf. Normally I would get a little bit of a bruise there after hunting but last Sunday the leather actually pinched so badly it's caused a raw ulcerated area which is pretty sore. Not sure if it's something I'm doing with my leg position or if it's the type of gaiters or stirrup leathers and just wondered if anyone had any ideas for preventing this?
 
I get this if I don't ride in chaps schooling, sometimes I ride in my waterproof trousers & boots and I get very badly bruised. Not much help I'm afraid maybe someone else can help?
 
I used to have this problem.

Now I wear skiing socks 'icebreaker Ladies Merino Skier Mid' and have not had the problem since, although on the couple of occasions when I have not worn them I have had 'pinched calves' so I think they must be effective!
 
Some sort of sleeve to slide over the leathers?
I ride everyday in short boots and long socks. 90% of the time I have no problems but then a different saddle/horse/leathers combination will make holes in my legs!
 
You can get "sleeves" - I've seen them in cotton as well as neoprene. I remain a bit unconvinced though as with hard riding I can't see why they wouldn't wrinkle and make for more problems.

You could try those Wintec single leathers. I don't know how secure they would be for hunting though - I'm not sure I'd trust them! (I'm not really helping, am I?)

Another option would be those pull on elastic calf protectors that jockeys wear, sort of high grade tubogrips.

I find my socks make a huge difference. I'm riding in very thin ski socks right now, or proper riding socks and find - despite me not wanting it to be true! - they are more comfortable.

I guess that's one of the reasons why "hunt boots" are such tough leather, though. :(
 
I find the Wintec Single leathers are worse! I've ended up with sores all down my legs from them! :eek:

Also if you cleaned your tack before hunting did you put your stirrups & leathers back on the 'right way round'? Just because I put mine on backwards somehow once and my normally fine leathers just about skinned me on a 1/2 hour fast hack :o

I have these and they are fab. I only do dr and sj so not hard riding but never had a problem and they are so so cheap. although cant seem to find where to buy them now, as I have had mine many years

easy enough to make though

ha ha about cleaning my tack - that doesn't happen v often but there is a right and wrong way round for the leathers????? i never knew that!
 
My calves are normally fine hunting but I always always wear long socks over my breeches, this year AHing I just wore some thin Arait gaiters but I normally wear Arait bromonts, even if riding at home if I don't wear long socks and long boots then I get rubbed on my calves. I normally ride in leathers that are stiched all the way round, but often ride other peoples horses as well. I tend to more get rubbed knees when riding other horses depending on their saddles :(. However I do ride hunting lenghth pretty much all the time, perhaps your legs just need time to adjust as well?
