Stirrup leathers too far forward... anyone noticed....?

I've had the suspicion for a while that my stirrup leathers hang too far forwards making my lower leg swing forward. I checked the stirrup bar and the hang of the leather and all seemed OK, but yesterday I noticed (yep, has taken a ridiculous amount of time) that in fact the 'bulge' caused by the girth buckles forces the leathers to hang at a slight angle and they ARE too far forward. Has this happened to anyone else?? Any ideas what I can do about it apart from have girth straps replaced for really long ones and use a dressage girth?

you could have the stirrup bars reset on to the tree, if you have an amenable saddler.
i've discovered that WOW saddles come with a double stirrup bar, one in front of the other, for 2 different positions. think i'm going to get one of those next.

Or, if it's the stirrup leather buckle that's causing the issue, try dressage leathers - you know the ones similar to WOW leathers, that you adjust down by the actual stirrup..... Do you follow? Am I making sense?

Yes, I know which ones you mean, but I think it's the girth buckles 'bump' that forces the leathers to lie further forward.

Good. But that's what I'm getting at - these would eliminate that bump........ as only 1 thickness of leather, instead of 3 and a buckle.......... Yes..........No.........?

No, wouldn't work, I don't think. Bump would still be there as it's the girth causing it not the stirrups. Oddy, I don't think it happens with A's saddle. Must check that today.

Oh lord - I need to go back to bed - I was totally thinking of the bump caused by the 3 layers of leather and stirrup leather buckle on the stirrup bar..... I may just go and get my eyes tested..........

Surely a shorter girth, one that fastens further down your straps, would solve the problem? It must be a heck of a lump!

Having had my wow saddles and swapped back to a normal one whilst mine are being altered I now hate conventional girthing

Why on earth I put up with girth buckles under my calf for so long I will never know!! Even dad used to have to pad his legs to stop them rubbing when he was hunting seriously

So yes, take saddle to saddler and ask for long event / dressage straps.

I think the straps are a bit short; if I had a shorter girth I wouldn't get a good enough grip on the end to tighten it... if you see what I mean. Bum. Looks like I'll have to get new girth straps and some shorter girths

having used dressage saddles for years i now cant get on with traditional girthing systems at all - it makes the saddle flaps feel all bulgy and lumpy and icky!

long live the long strap/short girth system!
