I am looking to get some new stirrup leathers. My present saddle is a wintec so im used to sythetic ones. Just bought a leather saddle (which will hopefully fit) and wanted some nice leathers on a budget of £30. Ive seen some stubben ones on ebay for £29.99, are they worth the price or are there and better ones on the market for around the same price?

nope not worth it - i had stubben leathers - they were lovely but im not joking when i say i have never ever seen stirrup leathers visibly stretch as much as they did

there were great lines where the leather has stretched

real shame - but ive heard it from a lot of people - stubben leathers are not worth it!

i think a pair of good english leathers are the best you can get really - i got some of those calf skin leathers with nylon in them - so that there wouldnt be a chance of them breaking cross country and all the wholes stretched and the whole stirrup leather went all wrinkled

turns out they are only used by sjers for best competition because they get wrecked so easily

I have Jeffries...and being *ahem* at the upper end of the weight scale, it was very important to me that they are good quality. I can't fault them, although I think they were a little more than the £30 you have budgeted

I wouldnt have the stubben leathers either - I was going to have them untill a lady at our yard showed me how much they had stretched.

I have got the Jaguar Harry Dabbs ones - rather expensive but it is my neck after all!

I don't think stirrup leathers are something to be bought on a budget because inferior ones could cause a very nasty accident. Buy the best that you can afford and they will keep you safe and last a lifetime.

I had some stubben ones but mine didnt stretch at all I also had the very best quality jeffries ones which were lovely. Amerigo stirrup leathers are georgeous as are prestige ones. Mine were all stolen so I've just started thinking about replacing them, I think I'm going to go for the bates ones to make sure they match my brown bates saddle perfectly

I wouldn't use £30 leathers either

The best in my opnion are calfskin bonded leathers.

You can get these from:
Amerigo
Pessoa
Jaguar
Harry Dabbs (non-brand Jaguar)
Henri de Rivel
Bates (cheapest??)

I have Amerigo, Bates & Pessoa. Not much between them, I like them all, you can find bargains on eBay as my Amerigos worked out around £35.

Cannot comment on Treadstone ones, but I imagine they are fine.

We actually make our own bonded leathers for £19 pair, but I personally don't like them as they are thicker than calfskin versions. However they are great for polo & heavy duty work.

This sense don't try and improve c**p ones by boiling them etc etc save another £30 and get something half decent synthetic stirrup leahters are the bain of my life

Bates, without a doubt......they are very good quality & they have a length of webbing stitched inside the leather so the leathers cannot stretch. I've had mine for almost three years & they're used every day & no signs of stretch yet.

Buy on Ebay though as they'll cost you £50 at a normal saddlers.

I've got the Bates Webbers (don't know if all Bates ones are the same, these are the ones with the loop that goes over the stirrup bar and the T-bar by the stirrup) and I wouldn't go back to conventional leathers now, these are SO comfortable as you have nothing under your thigh - also kinder to the horses back with less bulk through the sensitive area. They might be a little awkward if you were needing to adjust them regularly.
