Looking for some recommendations for stirrups. I've current got a regular pair but finding regular riding is killing my joints. I broke my ankle in December 2016 and it never healed right, very stiff and achey. X rays show its healed but I've accepted that it's never going to feel right :(
I'm thinking of getting some flexi stirrups but there seems to be so many different options at a range of prices, and it's confusing for me who never had this problem before. There's cheep flexible ones, expensive ones, offset ones and wide tread ones
What do you all recommend? My mare is 4 and we're hacking at the moment so looks and competition legal stuff is not an issue :)

Sprengers. Don't ask me what model they are but I've had them a few years now and they're great . I feel very sore/stiff in just stainless steel ones.

I've got a pair of the Endurance wide-tread/flexi ones, caged variety.

They take a bit of getting your head around to start with, but I find they do help me. I can't stand riding with ordinary metal stirrups, plays my poor old knee and hips up no end! Gaarrgghh! Never again. Not tried the Sprengers, might start asking Father Christmas if he's feeling generous this year............

Please see if you can try before you buy, depending on the ankle issue you may prefer better stability rather than worse (bendy stirrups = less stability, bigger tread = more stability) I like my Royal rider 80 - they are twisted through 90 degrees and take of the twisting pressure of turning your tows round and have a big tread.

Don't give up hope. I broke my ankle at the beginning of June 2016 and things have imprived in the last 6 months.

I found stability better, and regular stints of 5 minutes without stirrups also help.

How much physio did you have? Possibly a few more sessions would help - for me I was left with my ankle immobilised too long and was therefor having to rehabilitate the soft tissue as well.

7 months is no time at all. I broke my ankle in March 2016 and it's still improving and I hope it'll continue to do so for quite some time. It is stiff and achey a lot of the time but some days I don't notice it (and this was a major smash - tib and fib snapped in two, talus broken and ankle dislocated). I found riding really painful for a while and got some Amigo flexi stirrups. They are much more comfy but as said above, beware of the instability. I did wobble about a bit at first. Good luck - I'm sure it'll get lots better!

I broke both ankles badly and now have them fused as they went really arthritic. I was told that I'd keep improving for up to 2 years post injury so don't give up hope of improvement but from your description I suspect it will never be totally right.
I find cheap flexi stirrups really helpful

Compositi reflex stirrups have been a godsend for me. They are very reasonably priced so may be worth a try before forking out for a more expensive pair.

Have had bad sprains to both and arthroscopy to my left one.

I just have a pair of £50 from tack shop swear by them. Word of warning oil them and check under the rubber! Had a 5year old pair snap.

I love my spenger bow balance strirrup irons, don't get me wrong they are expensive but my best investment, I have only had them a month but I really notice the difference.

This ^
I have the royal rider as have wide tread and are flexi.
I am now 6 years down the line, able to use bent irons too :)

Thanks all, off to the tack shop on Monday to try a few out :)
Thinking I might go for a cheap flexi pair before investing in a really decent pair :)
