One of my ankles is weaker than the other (I went over on it hard about 10 years ago, it didn't break but it's been a bit off ever since). If I have my stirrups at a length where I can actually ride effectively, it aches for days afterwards. Depending on what I've been doing, I sometimes strap it before I ride but it doesn't help much. My stirrups are the normal stainless steel knife edge ones.

I've wondered before about investing in a pair of Sprenger ones - maybe the bow balance? Any thoughts on those or anything else that might help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks :)

Dibbin, sounds like a similar problem to what I found when I came back to riding. I now have a cheap version of the Sprenger stirrups (about £25) and have done since buying pony. No sore ankles! I rarely lose my stirrups since they move with my feet but cannot ride in normal stirrups at all now! I've had 2 pairs - my only gripe with them (which never occurred to me until one failed on a good strong x-country canter through the woods!!) is that it's not possible to move the rubber tubes which cover the chain links so 1/ the links probably don't dry well and therefore rust and eventually fail and 2/ you can't visually inspect the links. As this newer pair age though I shall be giving them a good wiggle about prior to any fast work!

At the very least, they're worth a punt at £25 to see if they help before shelling out (or not) on expensive versions ;-)

I have a cheaper version of the Sprenger which I got from Robinsons, and they have helped a dodgy ankle. I broke my ankle 7 yrs ago and then a bone in the same foot last year. The stirrups have lasted 7 yrs without problem, so would recommend them, if only I could remember the maker's name!

I used to use a pair of Sprenger lookey likeys for my duff ankle (kicked years ago right on it, ligament damage, bone chip - not great), and they did work well. But I would say have a look at strengthening the ankle if you can - since I've been in the gym more I've found that I could return to riding in my swan necks and touch wood haven't had any problems.

I have a dodgy ankle, I ride fairly long-ish as too short stirrups really hurt my ankle, but I use endurance stirrups and they are fab, really help with ankle and ball of foot pain.

Spenger bow balance. Helped me loads. Badly sprained ankle 10 years ago, not looked after at time. Paying for it now. Knee is shot.

I'm more comfortable riding longer, but I have a more stable lower leg and can ride much better if I put my stirrups up a hole :(

Would highly recommend Sprenger. Have had mine for a couple of years now and they gave really helped after I broke my ankle.
And as LankyLoll says, keep exercising to strengthen as well.
