I'm looking for recommendations on stirrups that are going to have grip even after I've had to get off for a gate on a bridle path and had to get back on with mud on my boots.

If only land owners would fix their gates!!!!!!!!!

Many makes of stirrups offer a cheesegrater tread which is very good for grip. I use sprenger stirrups with theses treads. They are basically as they sound, metal treads with a cheesgrater look and feel to them.

Bit of an expensive option and dont know if you can still get them but mountian horse used to make a variety of boots with special treads on the bottom of them that fit into their own make of stirrup exactly to give you a better grip. Might be worth a google!

You can get the Mountain horse treads (SC3S), but you need the matching boots to go with them or they're pointless, so yes, it is a pricey option! I have them and think they're amazing, so would definitely recommend them.

However, they are not so great in the situation the OP is talking about which is when your boots get covered in mud when jumping off to open gates etc. This is because the treads fill up with mud quite easy and you need to use a hoof pick or similar to pick your own feet out before mounting!

Cheesegrater treads sound like the best idea. I always try to scuff my feet on long grass before mounting up to get rid of the worst of the mud!

This doesn't work in winter weather and I have to climb up the gate to get on the horse

so until I learn to vault even cleaning my boots in long grass doesn't work when I'm mounting in muddy gateways!!!!!! And you can't scrape the mud off on round railed gates!!!!!

My OH was on about these cheese grater stirrups will put them on the xmas list!!!

Ah well, on with my next campaign, getting the Wiltshire County Council Bridleways Officer to fix some more gateways!!!!!!!!! Anyone want to help with that? Oooh I feel another thread coming on in the not too distant future!!!

I feel your pain! Have you considered one of those mounting strap gadgets? It basically extends your stirrup length but without actually having to adjust the stirrup leathers? May help you mount without the gate.

To be honest, when I find myself in a situation like that I plod on foot to the nearest wall/rock/raised ground instead of mounting from the gate, I always worry I'll twist my foot wrong, slip and get my leg caught in the bars! (irrational, I know!) I've been know to scrape mud off my boots with a random stone if I don't have a hoof pick on me! I now carry one of the folding metal picks that fits easily in my pocket.

Yeah, considered a gadget thingy but I worry about the pressure on my girls back with me pulling myself up, I've never had "spring in my step" not even when I was a kid!!!!!

And with the amount of gates (9 on one ride
