Looking at all these 'fancy', stirrups, and so many seem to have spikes as treads.

Do they not damage the bottom of your boots?

Genuine question. I'm happy with my shires plastic ones, but am doing a "try before you buy" day locally.

This is the one thing that puts me off, along with the thought that they grab/ grip your feet and don't allow for independent movement.

They dont dig in that much. Your foot can come out really easily too if you need it to. I have the flex ons, they are extremely comfy.
I also have a pair of Sprengers simple system 4 that are nearly new that I got for a bargain, so I am going to give them a bash in the next couple of weeks. They hurt my knee the first time i tried them but I will try again to see before selling them

I have Venice Tech stirrups and they do have a rough tread but they definitely do not damage or mark the soles of my boots! 😊

They do keep your feet exactly where you want them to be and I do like that because you don’t lose your stirrups nor do your feet slip through them.

The only thing I don’t like is that if I am mounting and my pony walks off before I am on then I can’t get my foot off the stirrrup because my foot is in it but the rest of me is below if you get my meaning. There have been times when I have had to hop after her 😬

Wouldnt this happen with any stirrup, depending on the height of the stirrup above the mounting bock? The same happens to me even though I have regular Sprenger stirrups with smoothish rubbers. Once my foot is in the stirrup, it feels a bit stuck and I need to mount.
Because I am old, I practise at home by putting my left foot on a kitchen chair and pushing myself up to place my right foot alongside.

And that seemed to have helped while mounting as I can now remove my left foot from the stirrup if necessary. If a horse is unsettled at the block, I like to walk her round in a circle and back to the block.

No it didn’t happen with my previous types of stirrup irons. The grippiness means I can’t get my foot off the tread easily. Just doesn’t slide off. I’m meaning mounting from the ground.
