Hi,

My electric fence energiser was stolen from the field last night. Very upset and annoyed.

Just wonder how many of you who use energisers have experienced theft? and what measures do you take to secure them?

Thank you for your help.

PS - It's not just the expense of replacement, but leaving my pony (an escape artist) at risk of laminitis if gets through fence. Already lost one pony to laminitis, so paranoid.

I know the feeling. I was absolutely fuming, how dare someone enter my field, take my energiser that I had paid for and put my ponies at risk. We replaced ours with a little 'shrike' and just energise one field at a time now. OH made a box out of sheet metal and welded a chain on. we chain it to a ring that is fixed to a fence post. It probably wont stop a thief, but at least they will have to put some effort into stealing it.

Thanks for reply.

I was thinking of buying the cheapest one I can find that will do the job and either chaining it to something heavy, or like you sorting out a box to lock off and secure.

I know it will not stop a determined thief, but would stop an opportunist without a bolt cropper.

I feel just like you mention - how dare they enter my field and take my belongings. Don't think I would ever get over it if my horse's were stolen. Anything other than them being stolen or harmed is overcome able.

I've had one stolen and it was chained to the fence - YO and another livery had theirs stolen too. They even took some of the posts and tape. Pretty sure it was pikeys, they'd obviously spotted them and come back with bolt cutters. Unfortunately I suspect electric fencing isn't really the sort of thing opportunists would take.

But you're right, it's damned annoying, we've had to make a permanent starvation paddock for the lamis now which is far from ideal.

The only consolation is mine was prone to giving shocks if you didn't handle it carefully (rabbit attacks) so I hope it gave them a good sting.

Until we get rid of do gooders that stop proper sentences being handed out, this sort of thing it will just carry on, there is just no detterent for the peices of shite that do this sort of thing, if you leave your car unlocked it's your own fault if it gets stolen, if you leave a window open to your house it's your fault if it gets burgled, if you leave your bag/wallet on show your inviting it to be stolen, if you are a woman and go out at night on your own it's your fault if you get raped, of course the criminal had nothing to do with it, he was drunk on drugs, had a bad upbringing, is disadvantaged, is blah blah bloody blah blah excuses, anything but repsponable for his/her own actions, so you left an energiser in a field in the open unattended, I submit your honour that it was deliberately left there to entice and respectfully ask you drop all charges, oh yes my bill to the taxpayer for legal aid, fekin millions.

About 18 months + ago our yard was 'visited' & 4 energisers together with a few extra things were stolen. When I replaced mine I had it in a locked steel ammunition box that was ground staked to the floor. Any thief would have been hard pressed to steal it.

This has happend to me as well. I now have one with a handle and put a chain through it and paddlock it to a thick post. wont stop them but may slow them down. I also had my stable burnt down a few years ago by some strange person who got a thrill out of watching fire engines!!
when I told the police that i was going to get a guard dog they said if it bit a intruder i would be in trouble!

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I have now calmed down and feel grateful horses are safe and well. Truly awful things happen in this world so £100 for an energiser is not very serious.

What makes me feel a bit happier is perhaps I have saved a pony from getting laminitis because it's owner can now fence it off.

I will have to buy Smartprice food all week to pay for a new one!!

Thanks.

I used to use a heavy riveted steel feed bin to hold the energiser and battery, but the sneaky bit was that I used the bin as the earth.Just touching the bin could give you a good zap in wet weather.

Well said pedantic!
The lady were i keep my horses had her energiser stolen, she hasn't bothered to replace it as they will only come back and steal it again.

Earlier this year i had half my electric fence posts stolen so my horses were running riot around all the fields. I know it was those f***ing 'P' word!! (Admin told me off for using it last time- apparently it is 'offensive'

Careful there Dottie, it's there "human" rights to sponge off the rest of society and break god knows how many laws without prosecution and upset law abiding citizens, they are just misunderstood poor individuals in need of understanding a cup of tea and biscuits.....

Oh, I forgot to explain. If you needed to turn the fence off, the trick was to jump ON the bin and undo the padlock.Jump off,Flick the lid open with somthing insulated and carefully reach in to turn it off.Didnt loose any more fence units.

Now that's class, like your style 007!! Now can you post a diagram/picture? My OH accidentally touched the tape gate hook on a galvanised gate once and got such a prang when he touched the gate he thought he was having a heart attack.

As for mine it's locked in the barn and the leads are threaded through a slot in the wall, then attached to the fence. It's also heavily postcoded with permanent marker so's any sucker buying it when /if it gets pinched can't claim they weren't knowingly 'handling'.

I got a knife and held it over a candle and burnt our postcode into ours, and I chain it to a fence post, but select a fence post hidden in the hawthorns....I have to 'glove up' to chain it up, its usually pretty well concealed anyway....but the only problem is I cant turn it off without putting gloves on....
