Just had a phone call off friend she had identified a confimed stolen horse it is lily skewbald mare from norfolk, horse has been identified by the the owners by email photo,s.
The horse was found in hortonwood telford with a group of travellers, the police will not get involved or even investigate, friend now does not what to do next ? Also in stolen horse section but thought i,d pop it in here as more people come on here.

So just what do we actually have police for, getting rather pissed off with forever reading "police not interested"

did they say "why" they aint interested ?

No the horse is still with the travellers, police refuse to go and even have a look at the horse.
Whats the bl**dy point, we are all fuming here we all have horses at risk, and by the time the owners get here they will be gone.!!!!

Thats disgraceful. One rule for travellers and a different one for everyone else. If it were my horse i would-

1) kick off at the police station and demand help or a concrete reason why they wont help.
If that doesnt work i would
2) Hire some muscle and go and get the horse myself

What an awful situation The police never seem to want to get involved with travellers, bloody ridiculous.

Have just spoke again to friend and police was too busy and will be out to interview her later, friend even approached the travellers and asked them to leave the horse behind and pull out but they got aggressive so she then thought it wise to leave.

This is ridiculous, I'm sick of these type of people just getting away with it

Can't think of anything constructive though noticed Telford Council have a Gypsy Liaison Team but doubt you can get hold of them on a weekend?

Agree with another poster, if it were mine and the police wont help I would take the law in to my own hands

If the police dont care, I would personally take matters into my own hands, even if it meant following them. Maybe the BHS could offer some advice?? Make a deal with one of the travellers perhaps? Offer them some cash? - I know it's defeating the object but as long as I got the horse back safely that's all that matters.

Could you not contact the local paper / media? Persuade as many people as possible to back you up for support and witnesses etc? This is really annoying me that the police won't do anything! Is there someone higher up or in charge that you could demand to speak to and make a complaint?

Ali from horse watch is still on the case and as just rang me to ask can we provide transport for the mare if she can get it seized tonight, transport as been arranged so fingers crossed.
Police have said they would not know what to do with it so we have provided transport and a place of softey untill the owners collect her.
Now lets see if the police have an excuse, i think we all need to start shouting as loud as we can to stop the scum thinking they are safe to steal our horses.

An approach was made which rapidly turned nasty there are around thirty caravans parked up so you could guess there are aroung 40 male travellers.
They will not let the horse go for less than £2500 local paper shut till monday morning, hopefully now the heads of horsewatch involved with disscussions with police we may now get some joy.

I hope that you get a result, and don't have to hand over any money!! After all the horse is stolen, and should be returned to it's rightful owners!!

I am in agreement with a lot of others, kick up a big fuss, and make the police do something about it. Why should these people not be subject to the same laws as everyone else??

Do NOT pay them a f*cking penny!!!! Sorry, but as I've put on your post in stolen horses this makes me sooo mad I can not explain!

My friends neice's pony was stolen by travellers many many years ago. It was even spotted being ridden bareback by said thief through a busy town but it was never found, The cheek of these people is just astounding and I am sure it's cos they know they are untouchable as the police are too scared and can't be bothered!

REALLY winds me up

Still no news i will update here and on the stolen horse page as soon as i here something, i am very angry as an horse owner whats the point of chipping and freezemarking if the police won,t even go and have look.
Friend as got people checking the site to make sure they don,t just disapear but for how long can you do this if the police take hours possibly days to bother to investigate.
I for one i,m going to be getting a petition up that police forces should take horse thefts more seriously, and be bothered to look at confimed stolen horses as soon as possible.

Bloody hell!
This is DREADFUL and if it were my horse I would be screaming down the station till they came, and then get my own bunch of heavies in to recover the horse. I would have every person I know on foot down there and get the horse back.
I found two stolen shetland with some travellers a few years ago, called police and they were there within the hour with the owner getting the ponies back.

This thread has made unbelievable reading and I can't add anything more in the way of suggestions to get the horse back. If it was a BMW they'd be there like a shot.

TBH m in my 40's and over the years I have come to have less and less respect for the police. Those that aren't completely ineffectual are just blatant bullies.

My heartfelt sympathies to the poor owner. What a horrible horrible position to be in. If they had turbo I think i'd be borrowing my mates shotgun and heading down there with a trailer - and face the consequences later.

I really think the only way to play it is you call the police you tell them seeing as they have been so unhelpful in helping you get back stolen property you are going to go in yourself with 'back up (tell them you are taking a shotgun for protection - they'll turn up then! Lol).

If whoever took that picture managed to get that close I'd go up with a horsebox/trailer and untie the horse and take it. If you have a bunch of large burly 'friends' with you the travellers won't be able to do a lot to stop you! Plus, by then the police will have turned up in fear someone's going to get injured/killed!

Some you seriously need to get your heads out of your Daily Mail bottoms.

1) Is the horse identifiable? By that I don't mean can the owner identify it from a photo because believe me I've dealt with plenty and that doesn't mean anything. If there is no pre theft microchip or freezemark you might as well give it up now.

2) Just because this horse has similar/identical marks to the stolen one does not mean that it IS the same horse.

3) Without sufficient evidence to positively identify the horse it is very unlikely that any magistrate would be prepared to sign a warrant to search for stolen property and seize it, or that Police would exercise powers of arrest and search.

4) Even if the horse was seized and removed how could anybody prove beyond all reasonable doubt that it is the same one - they can't without a microchip, freezemark or DNA. eventually the horse would have to be given back.
