I was concerned to read on this forum about a week ago about some horses which where stolen in Northern ireland and one of them ended up being taken by the thieves for slaughter to a slaughter house.

I was thinking that maybe horses taken for slaughter to a slaughter house or collected for slaughter should be accompanied by a signed vets certificate which includes a photo fo the horse, confirms the ownership of the horse and states the reason for it being slaughtered.

Would this deter thieves from stealing a horse and having it slaughtered for the financial benefit to themselves.

Maybe not but the meat man WILL buy without a passport, it doesnt take much effort for them to get one if they know the right people.

You can't take a horse to slaughter without it's passport.

Some of the abattoirs are also PIOs which makes a total mockery of the passport system.

I'm not sure that is correct, well at least not on one ocassion. We a horse PTS about three years ago after the whole passport business came into effect and when I asked the knacker man if he needed the passpost he said that had nothing to do with him.

I do think horses should be microchipped though, which is very easy to check, so anyone treating, buying, slaughtering, etc. a horse can quickly check whether it is on a stolen database.

i have to agree these passports are easy enough to come a cross and doesnt prevent nothing im affraid

Hi everyone, the horses stolen were mine. The horse that went to slaughter was my beautiful tb gelding, he was my life and I would have moved heaven and earth for him.

This guy would come to our house, when the horses were moved from the livery yard i had SPD from pregnancy (were the pelvis separates too much, those that have had it will know its a very painful condition). He helped us pack up and i could have swore than the horses passport was in the unit in the living room. He was packing things in the living room, and when i questioned him he made me feel bad about even doubting him. So being the stupid b***h i am i thought it must have been packed already.

However he admitted to the police that he took the passport. He refuses to say what slaughter house. Im now on anti depressants, ive lost weight and if it wasnt for my son then i would have gone mad. My vet has sent emails to vets around NI and ive placed ads upon ads. Even if it takes to my dying breath, i will get my babies back!
