This is a plea to the editors of Horse and Hound magazine.

Please would you consider having a 'Stolen Horses' section in the classifieds in Horse and Hound? As probably the UK's premier horse publication you reach a far wider readership than anything else, both here and abroad. It would be a comfort to those with stolen horses to know that their missing equines are being kept in the public eye. Seeing a photograph of a stolen horse on the internet, one can soon forget the details, but to have it on paper it would be easier to carry that image around and be able to compare it with a suspected stolen horse.

Anybody want to back me up on this one?

Think its a great idea. I know they do sometimes feature a stolen horse in the news section but a specific section would be excellent. Come on H & H what about it?!

Come on people, don't be shy, please register your support for this.

If your horse was stolen (and god willing it won't be, but it can and does happen to anyone) wouldn't you want to get maximum publicity for him within the equine community?

Or maybe some of you think it's not a good idea, in which case please say why. Perhaps it's been offered as a section by H and H before and nobody picked up on it?

I think its an excellent idea. A page or half apge, with a clear photo of each horse and a couple of details like height, age, distinguishing marks would be incredibly valuable, and could be pinned up in a tack room, or pocketed for reference while at a sale.

Dear forum users

Individuals who have had a horse stolen are welcome to place an advert in the classified pages of H&H to let other people know. If the classified team received such a request directly then they could set up such a section. The only reason it is not in place is a lack of demand.

Hmm, IMO I dont think owners should have to pay for this. I think a donation to the mag once the horse is traced maybe, but owners will have enough on their plate to worry about paying up for an advert, money which could be going towards a reward fee etc.

HHO Admin.

Thank you, that's great news.

Maybe the next step would be to make an announcement in the next HH issue, advising that a 'Stolen Horses' column is being set up, and inviting people to put their horses on there.
(Sorry, far be it from me to tell people how to run a magazine!!)

Is it alright for me to spread the word then, that HH is willing to create this column, through Horsewatch and on other equine forums, and among people who are looking for their stolen horses?

I don't think an announcement is really necessary. This service is already available so it isn't a case of setting up a new section. Anyone who wants to publish details of their missing horse has always been welcome to contact the classified team about it.

Just to clarify, I am afraid this isn't a free service - individuals will have to pay the same rates as those wishing to advertise their horse for sale. Unfortunately H&H is a business and cannot carry free adverts in the magazine - if people wish to advertise their stolen horses with H&H for free then they are welcome to do so in the stolen section of the forum.

While I appreciate your sentiments, I am afraid that we are not able to offer this service for free. Users who do not wish to pay are welcome to use the stolen section of the forum.

There is the permanent Horsewatch site which lists all genuinely stolen horses on it.

Interestingly about 30% of the horses that are reported stolen have infact strayed out of their fields due to bad fencing. Out of those stolen about 98% of stolen freezemarked horses are recovered. Of the horses that are microchiped only about 20% are recovered. Sadly only about 10% of horses which are neither freezemarked or microchipped are recovered.

I wonder if there is a company, feed/transport, something like that, that regularly advertises in H and H, who might be prepared to sponser half a page of stolen horses. Not weekly, but possibly monthly. Very good publicity for them, even better publicity for the stolen horses.

Thanks Owlie, interesting statistics. I've always said that freezemarking is the way to go.
