Got to our yard last night to find a notice on the board saying that 18 horses had been stolen from a yard near us (i'm in Bristol) by cutting through the hedge and herding them out. Can't find anything by using the magic tool of google - has anyone else heard this? Don't want to worry if its just another of those urban myths.........

NO sorry it is totally true! it was my friends yard and there was 18 horses stolen at approximately 3am. :-(

There is very good security including electric coded gates, however they had indeed cut through a hedge next to a locked gate at the back of the property and drove them across several fields...

Whereabouts in Bristol. Is there a crime number and details of all the horses?

They must have had some serious transport to remove 18 horses in one go.

Shocking!

Have the horses been recovered then? Seeing as they have suspects.

Are they really stolen or just moved because of some dispute?

Surely this would be in the news, that many at once.

Awful for the owners regardless of circumstances!

No they have not been recovered. They were originally legally removed the the 'suspects' due to 'issues' and thanks to a local farrier, the 'suspects' found out where they were........... They have also taken 4 horses that are not theirs!!!!

Cant understand anyone stealing horses at the mo, selling them on would be a nightmare as nothing is shifting. Hope they get them back!

Not sure I quite understand this but are you basically saying 14 horses were removed by rightful owner but additional 4 taken without ownership? I take it this is a livery yard dispute rather than an actual theft.

It does sound like this has more to it than simply stealing horses, so I can't imagine it heralds an outbreak of horse theft in the area!

Navaho - not strictly true - I put a horse up for sale last Monday evening, inundated with calls, first person saw him Thursday, made a full asking price offer, vetted Friday, dropped off at his new home Saturday. And I had people queuing up to see him!

i heard of 2 horses being stolen from one place in the early hours on saturday morning from a very secure yard but not heard about 18 being stolen.

The horses were ceased/removed due to them being dumped and welfare issues..... This has all been done legally by a city council, so any owner would have given up the ownership in that case...... The were at my friend for rehabilitation as most were walking skeletons :-(

So YES they have been stolen and the police are involved.
