STOLEN HORSES TODAYS IMPORTANT UPDATE

There have been numerous postings, E-mails and text messages warning horse owners about horse thefts in the last two weeks and giving details of the vehicles concerned.

May I assure everyone that no horses have been stolen in the last two weeks by any of the so called vehicles.

I have received a large number of texts and E-mails from different people telling me of all sorts of warnings of thefts and thefts all over the country but I can assure you all that no horses have been stolen.

If you want to review your horse security then take this opportunity of having them Freezemarked and take photos of them from all four sides.

The BHS will be putting a post on their web site this evening to update people of the current situation.

I am also dissapointed that Horsewatch have not bothered to update their web site regarding this matter so as to put people at their ease.

Thanks for that, that will help put people at ease. I think the last few weeks has made everyone extra security concious though - not such a bad thing!

Thank you for letting us know, yes its good that new travels fast, despite if its not correct, I suppose its better to be on guard and over cautious and perhaps despite all the panic, worry and perhaps sleepless nights the good thing that has come out of this is that it has made all horse owners in the UK have a huge wake up call, sit up and think about their yard security etc, freeze mark their horses if they so wish and hopefully prevent many more horses from being stolen in the future.:)

Hi Peter, thanks for your post. Quite reassuring too! I have just purchased the Bradford Telegraph & Argus and there is a comment in there about this "stealing" and they are targeting Thoroughbreds and showjumpers!!! Where is it all coming from? I agree entirely with your comments about Horsewatch - they have gone down in my estimation

Sorry but can I ask who informed you of there being no horses stolen??

Unless from a VERY reliable source it is very dangerous to post such things on a public forum!

People may start to get complacent as the 'danger' as passed enabling the culprits easy pickings.

I personally am going to remain VERY vigalent and I recommend that every one else does as well.

Sorry but this has made me a little cross!

let's face it, the only 'proof' we have that anything has been stolen is from random texts and emails, which IMO do more harm than good. People just think it's all a load of bull now... maybe if people only posted when they had concrete proof (not hearsay or a text message) of a sighting (or theft) people would be taking more notice. As it stands it's getting incredibly confusing and boring.

Maybe someone here could act as a filter and people could pm their texts to them and this could then be sorted into fact or fiction and only FACTS posted. Perhaps Peter or Mother hen? both of whom may have facilities and contacts to be able to ask for details from police forces?

I don't think for one moment that this post is going to make any sensible horse owner any less vigilant. I am pleased to get an offical update. It's all been going a bit crazy!

I know where your coming from Donkey .... but being a new comer to the site I don't know how 'official' Owellies (sp) update is.

Now if it said something like 'Middelsex Police have stated that there have been no horses stolen' and giving a link to the statement then it would be more official - however as it is it is just like one of those texts that are flying around - especially as it has been discretited by the links in the posts following it.

As a newbie I don't know what contacts Owellies has (sp) - for all I know he/she could have as many contacts as me regarding 'offical' info (which is none)

Hope I have not offended you Owellie (sp) (apart from not being able to spell your name

) and hope you can see where I am coming from

What's worrying me is that these texts could be put out to make people complacent (I.e the cry of "Wolf Wolf") If they put the texts round every so often in the end people will ignore them and then the theives can move in.
Am I being too cynical?

I had a text today regarding horses in North Yorkshire being stolen, I was also concerned that these texts and emails where scare mongering so decided to ring north Yorkshire Police.

I was first aksed why I was concerned so told them about the texts etc and that I was a concerned horse owner worrying about security, he said that yes their HAD been horse thefts in the North Yorkshire area.

I am a member of Horsewatch - Hertfordshire and I am also the British Horse Society Representative for North Hertfordshire. (I have been a volunteer for the BHS for 35 years). I have received numerous Emails and Texts about stolen horses within the last two weeks and was only in contact with the Lee Hacket the senior Welfare Officer of the BHS yesterday afternoon (Wednesday 4th June 2008) and he advised me that no more than the normal number of horses had been stolen. The BHS will be updating details on their web site.

Here is a link to it:

Yes! revue the security of your horses and have them freezemarked on the shoulder and take photos of them from all four sides so that you can send out pictures of them in the event of them being stolen to the appropriate organisations.

I would say that I am very disspointed that the national Horsewatch website has not been updated to provide up to date information on these E-mails and texts that are being circulated.

I hope that this information helps you all.

Here is an update from Horsewatch:

There has been further information received about people photographing horses, possibly with the intention of their theft to order.
The vehicles are a White Van registration number N253 XAJ and a Red Land cruiser registration number B16 RBB
One of the registration numbers involved may not match the vehicle so it is important that if you do report an event your information must be as accurate as it can be. Alternatively the number plate may be a clone so a good description of the vehicle is vital. So far no crimes have been linked to these reports but we must be on our guard. Some reports mention two males, others a male and female.

A number of horse theft reports have sprung up surrounding these events. We are aware that the apparent theft of large numbers of horses at one time are actually hoaxes. There have been individual thefts and the details of these are posted on the stolen horse register. www.stolenhorseregister.com
Where a theft has occurred owners are advised to contact Horsewatch and the SHR to register their details, a crime number is an essential part of a posting and must be supplied.

We will continue to keep owners updated via the Horsewatch Bulletin and if you have information to report please contact your local non emergency Police number or Horsewatch via our website www.ukhorsewatch.org.uk

Please pass this message on to all of your friends.
