the show jumpers stolen yearlings have apparently now been found safe and well and are on their way home. Good News. But dnt you think that leaving horses unchecked in a field for several days is downright bloody bad horsemanship? Mine are checked twice a day everyday minimum. Not dumped to get on with it as best they can. What if one had injured itself? it would have had to wait for treatment for ages. this is just wrong. Why isnt the forum up in arms about it? if they had belonged to some local kids I bet everyone would be complaining.
 
Very glad they've been found - but - like you - I was a bit horrified at the news report which said they had been taken sometime between the 7 and 19 August!! That's 12 days!!

It frightened me - because I have 11 yearlings in a field 2 miles down the road. A member of my staff has her horse on livery on the same farm - and sees them twice daily (enough to know they are there and they all look ok) and I give them a thorough check once a day. I DID go and buy another chain and another padlock for the hinge end of the gate!

Of course, instead of having been removed from the field, one of them could have been lying there with a broken leg - or a bad case of colic - for over a week!! NOT acceptable!
 
I posted about this in competition riders...and one of the responses i got was that she was at a show in France at the time. I still can't comprehend that somebody was not in charge of checking them but who knows...
 
I think we should all stop judging 'based' on what the press say - lets face it how many times do spot that the papers are not exactly 100% right most of the time.

All I can say is thank god they have been found............
 
They were taken sometime between 7 and 19th august. that's TWELVE DAYS. The news item also states they are broodmares in the field too,what if one miscarried or something,it wouldnt recieve vet attention quickly,would it? Do you check your horse that infrequently Meandtheboys? Also "she was at a show in France" oh, so its ok then to just b****r off to a show or go on holiday and leave horses to get on with it and hope they will be all ok when you get back! I'm with Janetgeorge on this one, and I think the RSPCA should look into it,it looks like neglect to me. The Show Jumping Association should definately have something to say, what an example to set for young people,maybe the BHS could issue a statement too,something along the lines of "its ok to leave your horses for days on end without being look at for injury or anything else whilst you go to a show." Maybe that will become official guideance,included in the stage 3 exam for example.

I totally agree - who's to say that the owner hadn't charged their care to an employee who had failed to fulfill their duties? We all agree that horses not being checked for that long seems unimaginable, but we don't know the full facts.

Let's not make judgements based on what we read in the papers, eh?
