Hi all,
I know this subject has probably been done to death but im just about to start a course of gastroguard however I also suspect hind gut ulcers. I've read gastroguard can make hind gut ulcers worse so was thinking about starting a supplement for hind gut ulcers before GG. I've read Equishure is meant to be good but can this be given alongside GG? If not is there any other supplements people have used?
Thanks :)

Ranitidine treats both hind and fore gut ulcers. It's pointless though. Unless you treat the source of the ulcers, rather than the symptoms, the ulcers will keep coming back, you can spend a fortune on supplements. Think about what is causing them in the first place.

Thanks, I'll speak to my Vet about Ranitidine but have already got some GG. Will see if they can change it but was thinking about giving something like Equishure so just wondered if others had used anything with GG. He's an ex racehorse and most of them have ulcers, only came out of training this year and has been passed around a little before coming to me so think that has caused the flare up so hoping once treated, now his diet and lifestyle have changed this will prevent them coming back :)

My boy was diagnosed with grade 4 stomach ulcers 4 weeks ago and has been on Peptizole and being rescoped next Tuesday. To be honest i wasn't seeing much improvement, he was still grumpy and standing with his legs very much underneath him so i started to suspect all sorts of nasty things (Google is a bit of a frenemy when you have a poorly horse!) Anyway someone mentioned could be hind gut too and due to how bad his stomach ulcers were i thought i would give Equishure a go - he is 6 days in and i lunged him at the weekend and he was much happier, he could maintain canter on both reins for a full lap of the arena (before he was scoped he would do 3 strides with his ears flat back and on the wrong leg!). I can't say for sure whether this is the equishure or the peptizole has finally kicked in but for £40 for the Equishure it is worth trying in my opinion :) I know a few people have recommended gastroplus but i found that a bit expensive and i didn't want something to treat both fore and hind because he is already being treated for the stomach ulcers and i didn't want to mess with peptizole as it is quite expensive!

Anyway a very long winded way of saying i would recommend trying Equishure to see if you see a difference :)

How much Equishure do you have to feed and how long does the packet last?

I fed Equishure when my mare was on omeprazole for ulcers and it definitely made a difference. She's a bit tetchy at the moment (change in weather, hock problems - probably a million other things wrong with her - bad week!) and I'm going to dig the remainder of the bag out of my locker tonight and start her back on it again.

Its expensive and I didn't find it lasted that long when you're feeling twice a day. Some people just feed straight bicarbonate and I'm probably going to try that as well. Last time round I got the mid size bag which was better value for money and got me over the last change in grass / upset tummy session.

I got the 20 day supply for £40 - it's a 1.25kg bag and i feed 60g a day, currently both in his tea as i don't go in the morning and it can't be left in damp feed overnight. My boy is a cob cross and around 500kg, they have different amounts you have to feed depending on diet and forage - someone told me they had to feed 180g a day when they first started but their horse was really poorly so i guess it depends! 60g seems to be making a difference for my boy though..
