One of my ponies was purchased very thin indeed to get him away from a nasty situation (new girlfriend had custody of ex-wife's pony, and it wasn't getting fed).
I took a stool sample immediately, suspecting worms, but go a call from the lab saying that all that was in the sample was gut lining and sand. We concluded that he had been eating soil to get something out of the grass roots in a bare paddock, and this had scoured his gut lining.
