Stone in sole

Dug this out of my horse's foot today. She has an abscess in her front foot and this came out her hind, which I was also poulticing as I thought she wasn't right on it too (although hard to tell due to front).

Anyway does it look big enough to cause lameness/bruise/abscess? It's not a big stone but it was flush with her sole so right in and I was surprised at how much of it, which was very sharp, was into her foot as there was just a tiny piece of it showing.

Pics show the location and the hole which was just a hole no sign of anything in it, when it came out.

I'm tubbing it and keeping it poulticed anyway just wondered if folk thought it could be the culprit.

We get this on the roads here - its sharp and really fine. I've not had it in the sole as you have there, but have found it rammed into the white line - you can hear it scrape on a hoof pick. I have a handy awl for flicking it out.

If it didn't puncture the sole, you may well be ok. Just a wait and see I think.
 
If you have ever had glass in your own foot you will know how much the smallest bit hurts if it is dug in! It is very small, but if it was buried in it could very well have hurt. Hope she feels better soon :)
 
Thanks equi. Hope it's the culprit. I did think she was better on that foot after but it's hard to tell when she's lame on the front as well. Blooming hope there's an improvement today!
 
From the size of the hole, it was in vertically, And it's certainly long enough to have been pressing on the sole corium unless she's got very thick soles. What a fluke that went in like that, I've never seen that before!

Yes it absolutely was in vertically, sharp end first. Lots of horrible small stones washed onto the roads at the moment.

It looked like a fleck of grit at first look. Couldn't believe it when I dug it out. She does have very tough feet but I thought the position might mean it would be hurting something.

Oh I hope so. It's my PSSM horse and this is day three of no exercise (although she is turned out, but obviously not moving much).
 
Could be the culprit all right. My gelding went very lame and got an abcess from a tiny slit that was caused by something similar.

Hope she's feeling better on it today.
 
Seems ok on that one today so fingers crossed that's what was irritating her. Still can't see a thing on the front foot but she might be marginally less sore and she's definitely rocking her new horsecrocz!
 
Having one Appy with a front foot abcessed, we now have the younger one looking a bit iffy on the same front foot! I am hoping that is just a bit bruised because we have gone from soaking wet to rock hard in about 24 hours! Horsecrocz are great, but I really don't want to need another one! The older Appy is doing great with her orange sandle on :)
