This year I've noticed since ours have been having proper winter feeds that I often (nearly every day!) find small stones in at least one of their feed buckets. Initially I worked out that they were coming from the sugar beet, so we switched brands, however today I have found some in their alfa a. I'm talking up to the size of a smaIl pebble and some of them have been very sharp. Is this normal/acceptable or am I being precious? It's not something I've ever noticed before and I've kept horses for years - I'm worried about their teeth!

I have also found stones and sticks in Dengie Alfa A oil over the past couple of months- had never thought to contact the manufacturer but will next time. Ours only have a few handfuls each feed to mix with supplements, so it’s easy enough for me to see foreign objects in it, but it wouldn’t be and would be worrying if you were feeding proper sized feeds .

I think it's essential to alert the manufacturer and keep the evidence, because if it turns out later that your horse has a broken tooth you will need them to pay the bill for sorting it.

I accidentally fed my 3 year old a stone six months ago, my own mistake. I heard him bite it, and sure enough when he lost a 3 year old cap a few months later it was broken. If it had been an adult tooth that would have been really serious.

It isn't normal. But I found several stones in my last bag of chaff - first discovered after hearing a big crack when my horse was eating it.

I phoned the manufacturer who sounded very concerned their stone screeder is not working properly. I've sent pictures of the stones and the batch number and was sent vouchers for 2 free bags.

But I've noticed all the bags in local feed shops are from the same batch so I have switched chaff until I see a different number.

Dentist comes tomorrow thankfully for a scheduled check.

Contact Dengie. I've done it twice. I found a mouse in one bag and then one was particularly bitty/dusty. Both times they sent sample bags for my to fill (yes one with a squashed mouse) and send back. Both times I received vouchers covering more that one bag to replace.

I had this with Agrobs chaff. The supplier kept swapping bags for me and it kept happening so eventually my supplier took it up with Red Rufus who I think are the importers and they flatly refused to accept it and almost implied I was lying ! I was so annoyed so voted with my feet and swapped to Thunderbrooks chaff. Its not happened with the TB chaff at all.

I am having this problem with Agrobs Leichtgenuss just now and Red Rufus isn't interested. It's very time consuming going through it thoroughly before I feed it but I refuse to go back to using TB chaff.

Yes I can well believe it. When my supplier approached Red Rufus they were quite rude. I was shocked at their response.
I know people have had issues with TB but I haven't personally, and their chaff is perfect for my horse. As yet I havent found stones in it.

Thanks for the replies - I'll be opening a new bag of alfa a tomorrow, if there are any stones in that I will be getting in touch with them immediately (and I'll be going through it with a fine tooth comb!)

This thread has jinxed me too! I’ve never found a stone in this companies feed and today I found a pebble in my chop!

It was only one small one out of years of using their feed so I won’t report it but if I find more I’ll mention it to them.
