So, i have moved to a new yard, i have a 13.2 pony, and she gets a rather large haynet for bed + no other feed as since i built up weight im finding it hard for her to lose it.. (she is turned out 8hours a day with not too much grass)

I ride most days however shes still got a Very rounded belly

I have now been informed a lady at my yard has been feeding her GRASS CUTTINGS CARROTS AND a FULL haynet (haylage) on a morning before i get there!!!

I have told her twice to stop it as i do not know if she has ever had lami & she's fat but she is Still doing it??

Any suggestions?

Major rant but im worried as i do not know how much she is actually getting

You must get her to stop!! Grass cuttings are NOT good for horses!! They can cause colic and alsorts!!

Put a big sign on the door saying do not feed horse, and then get there earlier if you can to see if you can catch her doing it! Who is she? Another livery? Random stranger? If she is the latter than you can always tell her you will call the police for trespassing!

Id tell her if the horse gets Lammi you will be forwarding her the vets bills.
(I know you probibily couldn't but does she know that? :D )
Speak to the YO and the rest of the liveries. Tell them all! If they catch her doing it they may also tell her to stop as you have explicitly said do not feed your horse.

That's really not nice of her. Could you thank her for her concern but say that you would prefer for her to focus on her own horse otherwise you will have no option but to take it further?

I would be so annoyed if someone did this to me.

How about a note on the stable door along the lines of 'A fattiebanattie lives here, she is on a vet prescribed diet, no sweeties allowed' and speaking to YO?

Grass Cuttings is a major NO NO.

Tell her to back off and if she has a problem with what you are feeding your pony then she is to talk to you about it not to just go ahead and do it.
Explain that if she ends up with any food related illness then she'll be seeing the vet bill.

Having the same problem :( Have given my round tummied horse a small haynet with small holes. YO stuffs it full of haylage so its bursting then have just found out she re fills it later on if he has eaten it all!!!!!! Very awkward as she is really nice and can't bear to see them standing in the stable not eating!!! I told her in the nicest possible way that if my horse does get lammi then I will be sending her the bill, also reminded her about the strain on his heart and lungs she has stopped now. I have also just asked her to feed him chaff and nothing else in his evening feed I could see the distain in her eyes but she has done what I asked. These people think they are being kind they are just totally un educated. Nice but firm is the way to go if this doesnt work then just the firm will do :D

What sort of yard are you on.

You've told this person twice yet they still do it, how did you find out what this person has been doing?

Do you mean this person that has been feeding your pony is another livery, in which case they should know better re the grass cuttings (are you sure it wasn't redigrass?, still they shouldn't be feeding pony anything, what did they say when you told them?

Have you not spoken to who ever runs the yard?

Very strange.

If this is another livery I'd be having serious words - including telling them that any related vet's bills will be coming their way.

strange, what time are u getting there though, if it manages to eat a full haynet before you get there you might be a bit on the late side and she might feel sorry for the horse?? This is not acceptable though, it is not her horse to feed!

You have to speak to the YO and make sure that this is followed through - as others have said she needs to have it pointed out to her in no uncertain terms that she is putting your horses health in serious jeapardy and could be held reponsible for the cost implications of this.

This sort of thing really pees me off. How would she feel if you popped round every morning to stuff her children big Mac's and pizzas because you thought you knew what was best for them? If I caught anyone feeding my horse anything they'd get very short shrift from me I can tell you!

She is another livery and she says i am cruel for not having her haynet full at all times

I MUST add she has a 13.3 and i can safely say i have never seen a horse so fat in my life ( considering ringing RSPCA ) he gets 3 Large haynets and eats every last morsal!

i have been there about a month the yard owner is in his 80's and we never really see him
im making a sign as we speak but no doubt it wont get me anywhere..

Im afraid it definatly is grass cuttings as yesterday she brought a bin bag FULL :(

Thanks for your advice guys im so angry:mad:

PS she has been doing the same with another 12.2 pony at our yard who got lami in august (nearly died) and on my first week at the yard announced 'she told me not to feed that pony but i do anyway'

id have gone mad by now.

tell her you will forward the vets bill to her, you've told her twice already. she obviously has no idea. and tell the YO to do something about it too.

ETA:- omg just read your new post. if it was me id have told her to F off :(

Totally out of order!

Tell her a f off and keep away from your pony!

Maybe try double / triple haynets so it takes the pony longer to eat? I do this with my cob, but he has always eaten everything by morning, no matter how much he gets!

What about getting hold of some 'condition scoring' literature from a vet or feed company to show her and demonstrate your pony's condition is xyz and she is on a carefully controlled diet because of the risk of laminitis etc!

If she has done this to another pony on the yard perhaps you and some other liveries could go to the yard owner together?

If not then move yards!

Blimey, that is totally unacceptable. However, what time do you get to the yard for her to have finished up all that food including a haynet? It is not good for a horse to receive all their ration of food in one big lot. She should have her hay split into at least two, preferably up to five separate portions. Could you not make use of this woman by leaving her a small haynet to put in with your pony before you get there, and then you can reduce the amount she gets later?

You are not over reacting ....although have you thought about maybe leaving your pony a small soaked haynet & sprinkling of hifi light at least then if she insists on feeding your pony, you know what she is getting

Sounds like this woman has either lost her marbles or she's trying to blooming well kill them.

How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

Ah crossed posts lol

That is shocking - noone has the right to feed someone else's horse whatever they fancy! I can't believe she can be that stupid to actually intentionally feed a horse grass cuttings either. Honestly, is she short of a few brain cells??

I would second the warning re telling her vets bills will come her way should your horse get ill and that she should mind her own. Maybe do some research into what happens to horses that are fed too much and how much damage it can do - find some case studies if you can, print off the info and shove it in to her hands so she can see what damage she could be doing.

God, another reason I am soo happy I am not on a livery yard!!

Sounds like our old YO. She used to feed my mare AFTER i've given her dinner, the problem was that she fed her not proply soaked boiling hot speedy beet and lots of other weird organic herbs which smelled worse than dog poo. but then someone caught her taking the hay out of my mares net and putting it in her horses net. and when i used to come up to the yard i never knew where i'd find my horse or what has happened to it this time cuz it was hardly ever where i left it, once i came up and my baby was tied up outside with her rugs off in freezing cold (it was in feb) and she was fully clipped, when i asked why YO brought her out, she said she wanted to check how much fat my horse has and she also wanted to measure her legs to see what size tendon boots her horse needs. i have found horse turned out in the school with no water and no food. it was a nightmare, so we moved and now horse is so much more relaxed and so am i cuz i know that if i leave horse i the stable, it'll be there when i come back and no one would have prodded it, left it woth no rugs, fed it half soaked beet or stole its hay.
put a sign saying 'this horse is likely to get lami, please dont feed it otherwise you'll pay the vet bill. thank you :)'

I know this feeling well!

At my yard I'm currently sharing a field with a complete nightmare woman! I have 2 horses in there, one being a 12.2hh welsh x who is a very good doer! (Barrelled in the space of a week now the grass has come through!)

She insists on sneaking a slice of hay for each of them into the field every night and generally being a pain, our field desperately needs cutting off but I'm yet to start that battle...

Her horse is disgustingly obese and she's the only person that can't see.
She bought it as a 'neglect' case from someone else on the yard and it was really better off weightwise before she did.

Sorry, pointless post, just wanted to vent :)

Whilst normally I don't like "pandering" to a person in the wrong. I think ^^ would be my solution too.
The other women clearly isn't going to listen to you when you tell her not to feed your horse.

So maybe you could sit down and chat with her, say you appreciate your horse has no food when she arrives, but because she is on a controlled diet the food she is giving your pony isn't acceptable. Therefore you're going to leave a haynet outside your stable door and this lady would be doing you a great favour if she could out that haynet in.
But make it very clear that she may only put that haynet in, and you are not giving her permission to feed anything other than the food you allow.

OP - sorry I should not of asked how old you are (don't be offended) but my thoughts were if you are of the 'younger generation' and the YO does not seem to have any control or authority of what goes on, then can your parents not have a word with this lady, thing is if your a young lass this women is obviously not taking you seriously or thinks she can do what the hell she likes.
