Stop feeding 'my' horse!!

I'd lose the plot! But it sounds like that would not make this woman listen anyway, so how about approaching it from a different angle?

Could you triple net the hay you feed, to last longer, and then leave another net of soaked hay and ask her if she would mind putting it up for your horse when she does hers?

If you're providing something for her to feed then she has no reason to add other things...hopefully!

Failing that, if she continues, I would pick up the nearest shovel and introduce it to her face! (plastic shovel, of course...I have a short temper but not murderous tendencies!)

Try a different approach.

Give pony full hay net of hay - but double net in haylege nets (small holed) and soak each for twelve hours. We did this with pony on three months box rest due to laminits; he lost a good amount of weight in that time, although he had a big hay net night and day, so was effectively ad lib. Horses need the almost constant food intake.

Tell woman that this is what pony needs, that pony won't be without hay (soaked, double netted), and if woman doesn't stop, you'll stick her head in the hay water bucket and drown her. Simples.

This woman must be stopped!!!!! I think everyone has already given you lots of advice so I won't hand out anymore, but I hope you manage to get the situation sorted out soon :)

Sorry, but had to giggle at this... brilliant :D :D :D :D Although it's probably not the best solution

I'm 20 :) thanks for your great advice although I do not agree with a plastic shovel (I'd use metal)!!
I'm unsure of her motives but I will try ever different avenue suggested
'When' I marry I rich man I Will have my own yard!! :)

Arrr right, old enough to fight your own battles then lol and be listened to properly by an adult, sorry I just thought if you were a young un, your parents could of had a word that all, all the more reason to be dam right annoyed really.

End of the day, you need to let her know how annoyed you are about what she is doing, rather than just telling us, let some steam off her way (if your a bit of a softy...when i say that, I mean too polite/quiet for your own good:)) and get her told!!!!

Good luck

Unfortunately you're at the age where you are old enough to go it alone, but young enough for he older ones to still feel the need to patronise you! Feel for you! (I'm 31 but look a lot younger so get patronised a LOT)

lol this happens to me too - told yard owner the other night that I was saving up for a mortgage , his response was noo you've got loads of time to be doing things like that youngen like you.... I'm 29 !!

This woman makes me so angry, if i caught anyone feeding my horses i'd freak out, how on earth are you meant to monitor thier intake if annoying know it alls are feeding extras.

I agree with the making up small net and feed and ask her to put it infor you.

As for the grass cuttings explain how it could kill your horse.

I would let my shovel say hello to her face for a lot less! I don't like people feeding my horse full stop she is very sensitive to certain foods so I need to be careful x

Print this off and hand it to her :D

Get a letter from your vet saying pony is on special diet?

I have a feeling if you prepare a net and ask her to pop it in she wil take it as carte blanche to feed anything she damn well likes.

Annoying isn't it! I do like it when I get id'd though!

Ha ha yes very much so - apart from that day I cried in Sainsburys when I did the weekly shop and the women wouldn't let me have the bottle of Red I so desperatley needed and I'd only brought my car keys and cash card out ....I'd had a hard day lol!

You are just going to have to be firm with this one by the sounds of it !

I had opposite problem at last yard, caught YO taking hay OUT of my friend's chubby horse's nets!! I mentioned it to my friend, she gets through a lot of hay! YO gets through almost none despite horse having 2 nets at night.

We had a new horse which for my preference was a little light so I had it on hay and haylege. The haynet was tied up to a piece of rope hanging from the roof beam as there was no tie up ring. There was a small metal loop in the wall. On a number of occassions I came up to find the haynet tied to the metal loop which I NEVER used. Asked YO about it as in 'did you have to go into so and so's box for any reason last night?' and got told no and something about a bucket but never anything to do with hay.

I would be FURIOUS if someone was feeding my girls extra, especially the old fatty. If you have tried being nice tell her straight. You can be polite but firm. -

'I have asked you to stop feeding my horse. I am now TELLING you to stop feeding him. Grass cuttings can kill horses so stop feeding him those. He is fat and on a diet, you will kill him if you don't stop. Leave my horse alone and please go and over feed or kill your own. If you continue to feed my horse I will report you to the RSPCA for cruelty and to the police for theft (assuming she feeds your feed) and trespass (you rent that stable, she should not go in it without permission)'

I don't think either of these would work but you can tell her you will do it, might bring home to her how serious you are.

Also need to discuss with YO and ask her to have a word. If no change after a chat, print this thread and give it to her, maybe with some info on how dangerous grass clippings and lami can be.

if we'd still got her id have lent you tuppence for a few days that would have stop her, sweetest little 12h pony going unless you went into her box, then she would reverse you into a corner & keep kicking untill you stopped moving/making noise damned near killed my gramps once but a sweetie any other time she also had one of our full height doors (for pop's heavys) & a full grille as if she even for a moment thought you had food she would try the same OVER the door! right cowbag she was.

i would have lost the plot with her by now & proberly have a pending assult charge, anyone caught feeding my boy without my consent gets a right roasting. old Y/O did & damned near killed both him & my gal Tinks.

read this post at lunch but as at work couldnt post - havent read other replies but if any one fed my horses against my wishes and bloody grass cuttings after i said dont they would be up against a wall . I take my horses diet vert seriously esp little lass and sorry no one but no one feeds my hoses - we had a liverie feeding sugar lumps - yes sugar lumps to the horses - that stopped straight away. I also dont allow feeding titbits from hand having experienced looking for and finding a visitors finger in the bed I was mucking out at a charity i worked for many years ago so sorry no feed my horses at all - My horses diet and welfare are my concern and if any one is worried talk to me so I can explain - to feed some elses horse with put thier knowledge is plain dangerous :) rant over :)

Just a quick update
rumour has it she is away at work until saturday morning:rolleyes:
But i have made a HUGE bright sign saying 'DO NOT FEED!!!'
Doubled up her haynet
Spoken to a few ladies on the yard just incase they see her doing it to advise against it
Im also considering putting a note on everyones doors explaining Why she's not to be fed so the 'said lady' doesn't get too upset?
But best of all ive dug out my shovel and put it right next to the stable door :D

Again thanks for your brilliant advice i have sent off to a few feed companies to see what feed they suggest so hopefully if i get a diet plan she 'may' take me serious :p

THIS is fantastic advice. Soaking hay for 12+ hours removes all the sugar and leaves behind the fibre so that your horse's gut will keep moving nicely but they won't be ingesting the stuff which triggers lami.

I would just add to make use of the woman leave a net soaking when you leave, with instructions that if your horse's nets are empty and she wishes to feed something at 4am, please put THIS net in for the horse.

Absolutely agree with this - we have a recovering lamanitic - thouigh this time it's concussive. However we do the double net and soak method and have a big bin just for the purpose of. We get good results with this as he can eat to his hearts content (maybe there's a couple of hours he hasn't got anything at most) and he's dropped weight beautifully. Lovely shape now.

I'd still try and stop the idiot feeding your horse though

I would also seriously consider writing to your vet, making sure the letter is clearly dated, stating what has been happening and asking them to place it on your records - just in case the worst happens and you do end up presenting this moron with the bills. Without some proof it is your word against hers if it all goes belly up.

The way that I would do it is ask her to stop doing it, tell everyone else to tell her to stop and if she still don't stop call the RSPCA and tell them that someone keeps feeding your pony without your knowedge and that you are concerned that your pony could get Lami. A person in uniform might put the frightners on her. Either that or ask your vet to make you a sign to put on her stable door, or you make a sign that sounds medical. If I owned a yard and someone was doing that to my liveries then I would threaten to kick her off!!!!. I had the same problem as you with my shettie and my vet made a point of coming to the yard and talking to the person in question directly and he said he would call the RSPCA on her if she continued. It is true that grass cuttings are dangerous for horses not only does it cause colic but if it is cut with a petrol mower they are ingesting petrol.

Just to echo the grass cuttings.. i would be very concerned with this as my pony went down with acute laminitis in all 4 feet with some idiot thinking this was acceptable!

i had this when my horse was on box rest, because she was in the middle of the yard she got fed. she was really fat and i didnt know why until i got told, i had her on a strict diet to keep weight off her legs. in the end i put a note up, not a snooty one. and people soon left her alone. worth a try as well as telling the yard owner at the end of the day its thier responsiblity for the welfare of you horse in thier care.

This livery needs some serious education about horses' dietary requirements.
Could you ask a welfare organisation's local representative to make a call to your yard and arrange for every-one to attend? This would get the point over, whilst not singling this woman out.
Although personally, I'd go for the shovel in face method.
