Hi, we have a farm dog that has taken a liking to escaping out the open gate. He is a happy dog, with a massive farm to run around on, so I don’t want to tie him up, but what device can I use to stop him?

This. Shock collars should really be a last resort; I can't think of any dog that would need one, maybe certain LGDs on huge properties where fencing it all isn't possible, but certainly no properly domestic dog. It's an offence (no pun intended) not to have the animal properly contained and a shock collar is at best lazy and probably ineffective, and at worst downright cruel.
