Stopping a dog from peeing in the house

I've just had new carpet laid this morning. The door into the garden has been open all day, and yet one of my dogs has just walked up and cocked his leg on the coffee table. I could honestly cry.

How can I stop them peeing in the house? I have two Yorkies and two CKCS. They get taken out for over an hour a day and have access to the large garden when they want it. Oldest is 13, youngest 9.

Thank you.

they are just saying this spot belongs to us, ha ha. I would just clean up the area with a good solution of dish washing liquid so the smell lingers and possibly they wont do it again. When you are outside with them and they wee give them a treat as a reward.

Is this a new thing? Given their ages, I'd probably want to rule out any medical cause for this, especially if they've only just started.

Assuming they're healthy, I would follow a similar routine to one I'd use to housetrain a puppy.

I know any dog could do it, including bitches crouching, but this is one very good reason not to have a dog!

Does one do it more than any of the others? Is he neutered? Local bitch in season? Sounds like a dominant male marking thing.
Does lemon juice deter them? (may have heard that somewhere?)

They're all boys and they're all neutered. I'm so sick of it. Every time I turn my back, one of them is peeing in the house. I had to pull up laminate flooring because they'd weed so much in one spot it had started to break apart. I just want a nice house for a change. They get taken out for a good 30 min run on a morning and again on an afternoon, then a quick walk around the block before bed. The door has been open all day yet the little sod would rather pee in the house than go outside. I'm really reaching my wits end.

I have a stairgate between the living room and the hallway into the kitchen. If I shut them out though they just pee in the kitchen.

I would have them in crates when you couldnt supervise and a stair gate restricting them to one room until hopefully they get the message and the fascination for the carpet has worn off.

Thank you. I'd love to do crates but we don't have the space. I'll check that out, Equilogical. I did pay for the floorboards to be professionally cleaned before the carpet went down so there should be no smell.

Sorry but it sounds like you are going to have to go back to square one with training, which will involve restricting them, probably using a crate and actually taking them out, supervised, every couple of hours and not just relying on them going out themselves.

Agree, you're going to have to curtail their movements, keep an eye on who is consuming what in terms of food and water, watch them constantly for all the tell tale signs - circling, sniffing, slowing down to stop and have a pee and get them out ASAP. If you can't watch them they will need to be outside or in a crate.

These are older dogs, they've been 'allowed' to do this over, I'm assuming, a long period of time, they're not to know that they're now no longer 'allowed' to do what they've always done because of a new floor surface, you're changing all the rules and it will be a bit harder because they are older. Best of luck though :)
