my friends horse regulaly pulls back/throws her head up and break the bailer twine she's tide to, just wondering if anyone has any ideas as how to teach her to stop doing it?
Fyi- back etc all fine, loves being ridden etc, just fidgetly when standing waiting etc.

when i worked at a dealers the pony i rode somehow picked up this habit, i had to tie it up and then stand behind it in preparation with a prickly broom.... everytime the pony backed up it got prodded with a prickly broom.

It did in fact work and after a few times of going through this the pony decided a prickly broom was worse then standing there!!!

Please do be careful, friend lost top of finger and part of other two fingers in horrible accident last week concerning twine.

OP, try the elastic ties

We had this with one of the horses. Tie the horse up as usual to the twine, then run a lunge line from the headcollar through the metal ring and then wait. Make sure you wear gloves and a hat if they have a tendency to rear. As they pull back and the twine snaps hold the lunge line, we waited for them to stand after doing the initial trantrum of snapping the band and then shortened the lunge line and retied the leadrope to another piece of band. We didnt stay a word through the whole process and only praised after she had stopped trying to figure out how to move.

In the shorterm could you cross-tie???

Our mare had 3 good attempts and then gave up.

what about getting an old inner tube off a bicycle and cut it up so that its a strip, not circular and tie up to that. They shouldnt get away cause it will just strech. only thing is to make sure to make the knot tight so that it wont come untie! the first time you do it the horses face is quite amusing to watch cause they dont get why it doesnt breaks!!

i wouldnt double or plat the twine cause the horse could panic and could cause an injury as there is no give in it.
Hope this helps

ok I'll tell her to give the elastic ties a go. The problem is that there isn't like a set time for her to do it. SHe'll be standing fine, being groomed or something, and then suddenly she'll pull back and break the twine.

I would have the lunge line there ready, the elastic ties will still snap at some point - not really addressing the issue.

Also wasn't there a recoil issue with these elastic ties springing back and hitting the horse/owner. I went to the yard with one and the owner said there had been issues and requested they werent used at her yard???

Don't bother with the twine at all. Tie straight to the ring and DON'T put the end of the rope through the loop. I never use balertwine. I will use string (not twine) for travelling only.
