Stopping a runaway!

My lad is in a loose ring french link snaffle, sweetiron bit.. it does work, but not for all of them.. be prepared for not an immediate reaction though, sometimes it takes a while to see any real improvement (some prefer them when they get a little rusty, tastes better apparently)..

Thank you and everyone else for all your help and advice! We do ride out with another horse, a very good one that puts up with all her messing about! I will ditch the carrots, find a sweet iron bit and if she's calm enough try those transitions again! And definitely try to stay relaxed! Thank you all!

As my ma says sit like a sack of potatos on your horse and pull with one rein so s/he turns in a circle and stops. Works on my pony when she bolts. Good luckxx

Trust me I sit like a sack of potatoes! Nothing will stop her ATM. I am really thinking about these carrots.... It was def about the same time she started having them that she started acting silly! I googled it too and a lot of people can't give their horses carrots because it has the same affect! I will keep you all posted whether she calms back down or not... And I really do enjoy her, she is such a lovely horse usually and I can't wait to get back to normal! Thanks again!

Even if she tanks off the second you do a transistion to trot, try to think of it as transistions within a pace. So she might do 10 strides of manic trot, then you ask for a balanced working trot for 5 strides, then a few strides of walk, then it might be just 8 strides of tanking trot, then 7 of a nice balanced trot & so on. And depending what level she's at in the school, doing desired normal transitions within a pace will work too. Eg if she has too much energy for a decent working trot, ask for a few strides of medium trot. & even just shortening & lengthening the stride. Plus when she races off, try not to rise faster to keep up, she might stay with you instead. And as well as diagnonals, vary between sitting & rising.

I'll give it a go but when I say she wants to tank off I mean she is about bolt! She has already done it once at the end of a ride then on the next one I just felt her about to go from start to finish. Letting her go up to trot was like saying 'ok you can go!' And she flew! This is not my usual calm cob!

Forgot to say lots of half halts if you aren't already. And for bits I'd try a copper roller, difficult to grab, but as mild as a snaffle, & not met a horse yet that disliked one. Good luck.

Lunge for a good while before you hack her out to take the edge off. I was in a very scary situation couple mts ago where I had zero control, not a pleasant feeling and very dangerous! We are back hacking now in short bursts but only in company. Even 10mins down the road and back and building it up slowly.
