Was talking to our local community policewoman yesterday, There have already been thefts of hay haylage etc round here. She told me a farmer had suggested that, if you are storing small bales of hay, it may be worth considering cutting the strings of the bales where possible, especially on the visible front bales, and then just shoring them up. It will take a very enthusiastic or motivated thief to trudge to and from the getaway vehicle with flaps of hay falling everywhere!

Yes, I've heard of people pinching hay also. This thread has also just reminded me that I really have gotta get my butt in gear and fill in the forms that my local Horsewatch co-ordinator sent me ....... its only a fiver a year and I think its good to keep connected so you know what's happening locally.

The other thing that apparently is very pinch-able is solar generated electric fencing energisers.

my problem last year was straw being stolen and ending up in a stable round the corner of the yard. *sigh* I did resolve that but it took a while.

I can imagine hay thefts will be on the increase this year in areas of shortage. Cutting the string sounds good, but then it'd blow away if it was mine, lol.

Two years ago someone broke our gate, backed a trailer/lorry to our barn, smashed open the barn doors and took 200 bales of hay overnight :( must have been between last check at midnight and first check at 6!
