i was trying to remember what someone told me once...really rattling my brains...is it vaseline u put in their hooves to stop ice building up in their hooves and putting them on stilts?? lol, just wondering considering the weather... xx

I was dscussing this with our horse dentist last week, and she has been using vaseline or lard. I haven't tried it because ours have been mostly in. Although with more snow on the way may have to invest in some.

asked YO if we should put anything on hooves, was told not to as basically vasline etc. only works for the first 20 mins or so anyway

horses were out for 3 hours and were fine, no stilts!

Vaseline works if you put it on well, and by that I mean, make sure that you rub it in so that it is warm and won't fall out in cold blobs. make sure you pack it in the frog grooves and a good smearing round the edge, where the shoe meets the hoof. My guy is out for 12 hours in this bl***y snow and ice rubbish (minus 15 here yesterday), and has no stilts at all. If i don't put any on, we have extreme high heels to deal with before we can walk up the road to our steading. Tried and tested and proven to work. the other thing some people use is engine grease, not such a fan of that one.

Mrs Mozart, we are off the same generation from the sounds of it. SOmetimes the old ways are the best ways, but not always.

I have some grease for the trailer coupling, I might give that a go!
