Stopping mane rubbing out - Snuggy or Lycra Hoods?

Hi,

Do snuggy/lycra hoods stop the mane being rubbed off by full neck rugs?

My poor horse lost most of his mane last winter & no sooner has it grown back he is back in full neck rugs & it is rubbing again....

Any rubbing proof suggestions greatly received!

I can't really comment on the hoods but the advice I have been given is to put lots and lots of mane conditioner on and this makes the mane silky and prevents rubbing.

I am giving it a go this year and so far it appears to be working.

Not used hoods either. A friend bought a Supreme Products mane saver at HOYS and so far its working - her horse has been constantly in a full neck for weeks now and his mane is still intact :)
 
Be careful of lycra hoods - the ones that cover the poll area and have eye-holes in them; coz I put one on my boy a few years ago and turned him out. Went back later and he was just standing there, I wondered why - and when I got nearer I saw that the hood had slipped and gone round and completely covered his eyes and his nostrils, and he was just standing there, bless him, looking very miserable.

I'd never, ever use a lycra hood again (not the eye-hole ones anyway) and I remember there was a similar thread on here a while back where someone else said their horse had had severe eye troubles coz the same thing had happened; the hood had slipped around and caused abrasion to the eyeball. So be warned.

Have not tried the snuggy hoods ones so can't comment.
 
You may have to accept that (particually if you have a fine skinned horse) that nothing will stop full necked rugs from rubbing mane out, except not using full neck rugs. Some people have found that the half neck/wug style doesn't rub and some people have returned to using standard necked rugs.

There have been lots of posts about this subject and even when looking into different rug makes, mane covers, horse breed and conformation, no-one has really fully got to the bottom of the issue.

When your horse is grazing, is the section of rug over the rubbed mane very tight? If the answer is, 'yes, it's so darn tight that I cant even get my hand between the rug and my horse's neck' then you will probably always have this problem.
 
I use the Lycra Hood and while it saved the mane it rode up her face and rubbed the corners of her eyes. So stopped using it.
Right pain.
 
I found the only thing that worked for mine was to wash his mane regularly to prevent any build up of grease as the grease is what makes his mane fall out.
 
Snuggy Hoods. I have a Friesian and spoke to loads of people at the Friesian Inspection show in Leicester. They all use Snuggy Hoods to protect the manes. They have like a silk lining in. Also a good tip. If you spray the inside of the hood with coat sheen it leaves them with a lovely sheen on their necks.:D
 
Have to second the washing as well ... though with a snuggy hood on 24/7 there is no grease to wash out! :D
Heat is also a problem. I tend to use the snuggy hood instead of the neck rug now and only use a neck in the absolute foulest of weather
