I'm on a DIY livery yard and three weeks ago two new horses arrived and were added to the field my horse is in. My horse is 18 and likes a quiet life in the field. One of new horses is a huge 6 year old and has been pushing my horse around the field biting his bum and the top of his tail and he is now covered in bite marks. I'd rather not put a rug on my horse and changing fields/herds is NOT an option. I've tried liberally put fly spray on the area in the hope that it might help but that hasn't worked. Has anyone got any other suggestions? Is there anything I could put on my horse (avoiding the raw skin) that would deter the biter.

ETA: I've just remembered using bitter apple spray on one of my dog's years ago. Would you use that on a horse?

Honestly, I’d move fields. I had this last year and it was a nightmare. It also cost me a serious amount of money in rug repairs and just ruined rugs. Not to mention the misery to my old boy.
I split them, it was hard because he them shrieked to be back with the bully.... no winning ?

I smothered a fly rug with Nettex anti crib gel which worked well. I did have to be careful to wash my hands after grooming.

Why is moving fields not an option? Safety comes first. What if this 6yo comes up and tries to bite him just as your standing in front and in his haste to escape he knocks you flying and you get hurt?

Yes this! Or what if the biting escalates to something worse? I have one horse of a similar age (17) and one who is older (27) and I would not leave either of them in that scenario, no matter how complicated moving was.
