Stopping shoes rusting?

Farrier told me a paint type stuff to put on his old shoes to keep them silver and not rust it was called red ..something, any ideas?? thanks :)

Only thing I can think of is red oxide primer, but that's red! It's an undercoat, basically. Paint them with silver Hammerite? Or dunk them in a rust remover and paint them with clear lacquer perhaps?
 
Scrub, wire brush then clear varnish? Done that before (have shoes on my saddle stand). My dad did spray paint silver then attach to the grille on the front of our car. That looks good too.

Hammerite can stop the rust when applied straight but you get a better finish if you wire brush the surface smooth and rust free first.
