Storm Darragh

Mines in a large barn with a huge straw bed to pace in if she needs to, and plenty of haylage and friends. In an orange zone rather than red but it’s getting wild out there!

In the red area north Devon coast here. We too had the govt alert that nearly gave me a heart attack! Shouldn’t do that to people of my age 😂. I’m sure we had a red alert for high winds a year or two back and in the end it wasnt much worse than we’re used to here with the sea on one side and the moors on the other anyway.

In the amber bit here in Cornwall, the two remaining ancient beasties are out in their field with high hedges every which way and their stables open if wanted, it’s a bit blowy and just been to the village late night Christmas shopping which was wet but fine.

Sounds like the wind is just starting to ramp up now.

Utter madness that a big tack sale at an equestrian centre in Devon is planning on going ahead tomorrow at 10.00am!

Our power went two hours ago and according to the forecast we’re only at about two thirds of the wind speed it will peak at. We’re only in a yellow area but are exposed on the top of a hill so it’s always much windier than forecast. I think this is already one of if not the windiest I’ve experienced here.

Checked on the animals at midnight and they were choosing a hedge over a field shelter or barn. Wishing I had a camera on them at the moment but will have to wait until morning now 🤞

Its just shy of 4am west coast ireland here, and it’s finally settling down to 70-80 winds. We were red zone from 9pm-2am. Ended up being 10.30pm it started to gust viciously.
I was very tense all day as a few storms here can be jaw clenching, and this storm was forecast as nasty, and it had some wild swirls, but there were gaps of peace in between, rather than constant havoc, at least.
Luckily rainfall stayed minimal instead of apocalyptic as forecast, so the horses were in and out of the barn throughout, and didnt seem too bothered. I was more stressed 🤣
Sometimes they over or under forecast storms here and its more stressful not really knowing what it will turn out to be!

Hope everyone copes ok where you are and disruptions are minimal. 🤞

I've been awake for about half an hour but not due to the weather.

It's still and calm outside. The forecast says I'm currently experiencing 56kph winds but there's nothing, not even a breeze.

I've cancelled plans for today and was assuming it wouldn't be safe to turn out but at the moment, it looks like the weather is delayed maybe??

I've been out to check on the animals at 5am and they were in the barn munching some hay. Relieved they've got through the night ok so far. Need to have a look if my rug can take leg straps, don't usually like them but in this wind they'd give a bit of extra peace of mind.

Our electric is back, feel incredibly sorry for the poor person who was out working in this to fix it.

Luckily inland enough to be amber not red, but the wind woke me up and the lights are flickering so made a brew quick! Not venturing to the stables till it’s light though 😬.
I did exactly the same! Facebook is full of reports of power cuts and trees down in the area so I decided it was worth getting the kettle on straight away 😂.

Well it’s in full swing here now. It’s a constant roar and something has just gone flying in the garden. But at least we still have power and the phone masts haven’t gone down…. Yet!
The roar has been constant all night here as well. Horses fed, hayed at 6am and I’ve gone back to bed.

Horses have all been shut in stables all night, top doors shut and they have loved it.
ETA I also did the kettle and coffee part before the power goes. Got to get the important parts of life done.

I can't believe we still have power, going to rush downstairs to make a coffee now before I tempt fate!

I have hardly slept all night, kept getting woken up by the noise and worry about the horses. They are still okay though thank goodness, it's still dark but from what I can tell on the camera buildings and fencing are still intact.

Yesterday I put out what I hope will be enough hay to last until tomorrow as I'm not sure I'll be able to open the back door when we reach 80mph gusts later today.

Hope everyone stays safe.

Been awake here in Shropshire since 4.30 as we have a vent in the bathroom which has been banging with increasing vigour since then. Lights are flickering but staying on for the moment and I’ve just had a coffee and am summoning the courage to head out in the car for the 8 min drive to the yard. I live the closest out of all the liveries so will go and check water, hay and skip out the worst of the 5 stables and check the 3 out in the field. Stay safe everyone

We’re okay, slightly protected because of the hill above us. We are though surrounded by mature oaks and ash trees, all of which are whipping around in a frenzy.

I’ve made a flask of hot water and have gone back to bed with a second coffee. Lurcher will need to be bullied out from under the duvet in a few hours time.

Hoping everyone human and animal is safe, thankful all the leaves are off the big trees around us.
