Stout/Guinness

Does anyone still feed their horses this? Was always fed as an iron boost/pick me up at a dressage yard I was at years ago, but havent seen anyone do it since?! Thoughts?!

I do every now & then! The horese love it, I'm not sure if it really does pick them up or not but it is probably as good as many of the more expensive 'wonder' supplements out there.

We used to feed this when competing to keep a horse interested in his feed. Never came across a horse that didnt like it and it didnt appear to do any harm but wouldnt like to claim it had any significant nutritional value!

I know it is high in Iron, people are advised to drink it if slightly anaemic....

I also give it to mine at Xmas time - they have an entire box full of Guiness! Although think they'll have it going into the new year as don't really want drunk horsies!

I used to give Castle Guinness in his feed on Christmas Day, I'll be doing the same with Ali this year too.

Spooks doesn't like it!!

I bought some especially a couple of years ago at xmas, and that is the only time i have ever seen him turn his nose up at food!!

do you just put it in their feed? My mum loves stout! it's supposed to be really good for you.

when in full work jack gets a can it once a week mixed in with sloppy sugar beet. he loves it and is always in a good mood after. only likes guinness tried murphys once and he had a bit and gave me a filthy look and didn't eat it. men.....

Never tried mine on Guiness, but bet S would love it, he pinched a can of lager off my sister in the summer, thought that was very tasty

Havent tried it but might be a nice treat for horsey who hasnt been feeling 100% lately.
Quite funny, horse just left our yard in the summer who was called Murphy's Stout

Mine have it every Christmas too. They love it! Just put it in their feed instead of water. I never realised it has any nutritional benefits though!

Someone once gave my horse rather too much at a show.He went flat out over the jumps, flattening most of them. whinnying at the top of his head. Not very P.C. but was a very long time ago. I also drank it when breast-feeding on the excuse it helped my iron levels. Again not very P.C.

PMSL!!Never given my lad it but he chased my hubby round the field last summer coz he had hold of a can of lager!!
Went on a pub ride once to and the bugger i was riding nicked my lager and lime

lol!!Pleased he wasnt breathalised on the way home,lmao!!

Mine used to get it every Tuesday when I went to the mess at the Naval Reserve....they became honorary members of the mess

Now Ralph gets it at Christmas, New year and birthdays, a four pack is ready and waiting

Will give a Christmas toast to the boys. Mind you, my connemara is a lager lout - I got into the habit of having a bottle of lager after my riding lessons on summer evenings last year and he used to slurp a bit off my hand - loved it!

Thought it may be a cheaper version of these "high iron" supplements you can feed when they need a boost

Offered some to my pony last year and he didn't like it. Thought about Sweetheart Stout. Bit concerned though as he's laminitis prone
