A lady at my yard has a horse who gets maggots in his sheath, obviously this makes him very uncomfortable she tries to keep it clean and has tried fly repellent but because of the area has to be careful. Nothing is working has anyone heard of this before or any suggestions on what might help?

Ivermectin wormer (like Eqvalan) squidged onto the area!! This is what my vet advised when my horse got fly strike in a foot abcess.

It only kills the live maggots, so doesn't really get to the root of the problem. It sounds like his sheath needs a really good clean out.

yes my friends horse had them, sadly he kicked out at the wall and broke his leg, not sure if linked but not very pleasant

I know it is really disgusting, he lets him clean in so not sure its a case of it being dirty, and apparently it only happens in summer when the flies are out! So glad i have mares, just wondered if anyone had any ideas, thanks

Sound like he has a 'bean' (build up of smegma) in the urethra fossa which the flies/maggots are breeding/feeding on. They need to call a vet so the horse can be sedated to allow the bean to be removed. Poor sole must be incredibly uncomfortable. My friend horse tends to get beans and last time the vet removed one, she mentioned she had recently attended a horse with maggots!!!
