I had a jumping lesson last night and my instructor suggested that a straight bar bit might give me a bit more control. Probably I should have asked at the time (!) but I'm not quite sure why a straight bar bit would be more severe? Or which one might be suitable eg. snaffle, pelham etc?

The horse is 5 and can get a bit wizzy jumping, but she is getting much much better so I'm reluctant to go to anything too strong as the schooling seems to be working. My mum in particular has an aversion to pelhams! On the other hand a few more brakes XC would be useful... She currently goes in a Neue schule tranz lozenge fulmer.

Any thoughts welcome, thanks!

I'd ring your instructor & ask their advice since they are the one that suggested it. They will have more idea about your & your horse than we will :-)

Maybe he/she just meant that you would be better with a straight or mullen mouth snaffle? He/she might just think that it would suit your horse better than a jointed one

Yeah that would probably be sensible wouldn't it?! it was the first lesson and just mentioned in passing. Will ask him again next week. Maybe I misunderstood but the implication was that a straight bar was considered a stronger bit - just would be interested to know why that was the case, as someone else has said this before too...
Ta!
