Well have come to the conclusion me and my Bates saddle arent ideally suited, as really is too forward cut for me, and encourages me to bury my legs into the knee rolls and makes my lower leg ineffective. So, could do with a nt so forward cut jump saddle, preferably close contact, and dont like big blocks!! Any ideas? Just for when feel rci enough to get saddler out....and if anyone looking for a 17.5" bates momentum saddle, lovely condition....

im only short and also dont like big blocks on saddles as i find them too restricting, iv got a close contact prestige paris, very reasonable priced and i love it, very small block at front but high so doesnt get in way when i go xc, and small one at back

My Jaguar xjs (for sale.....) is great for my stumpy legs, the knee rolls aren't too big and the saddle flap nice and short.
The horse is built like a giraffe not me!!! lol

Exselle single flap - hardly has (well doesnt really have any!) blocks!

Took a while to get used to but because of the lack of blocks it is making me get my lower leg down & secure

Unfortuantaly dont think the Prestige will fit my horse as he has a huge shoulder, and apparently they arent great for bi shouldered horses....will keep in mind though, thanks

Yes but I dont think that is always a good thing! Cant seem to find any saddle I can have short stirrups with as my knees go over the ends!

Worth trying it I would have thought and they are lovely quality

No sadly not I have the SJ version (xjs) I have evented up to advanced in mine though and it has brought me alot of luck. Am not eventing anymore as I am concentrating on the show horse, because I am small I am more suited to my show hack than the 17hh NZ TB!

It's not close contact but I am very stumpy and love my Albion K2 jump. I used to hate Albion saddles, but I can't fault this one, it's fabulous. You could get it made more close contact style by having long girth straps put on, which is what I will do with mine eventually.

Flyover might suit you, no blocks it has thick knee pads instead & is the only saddle that Dubh is happy in due to his large shoulder.

I have a similar problem and am looking for one at the moment. The problem is with my short legs I can't get near the knee rolls on some of them without hoicking my stirrups up to jockey length!
The one I have is an old Prestige, its absolutely wonderful - not quite so forward cut as the new ones. But they don't seem to make one like it any more so I'm going to have to find something else for the other horse.
Saddler has suggested an Ideal 1450 - slightly deeper and straighter than some jump saddles. I haven't tried it yet, but might be worth a look for you?

Thanks SC, had an albion k2 before on old pony, and hated it on g, as was too much saddle for him as he is only wee to sit on! Thank you though

Ooh Yes that makes sense, when I was working in a SJ yard they had some stallions with huge shoulders and they only had Prestige (was the Michel Robert ones?)

I would say a Prestige is good for big shoulders - my horse has one and it fits him a treat. Guess it depends on model. I have a Paris K.

My Ideal was pretty good was not forward cut enough for me but did not have big knee blocks as I am 5'9 and ride short so in the Ideal my knees kept going over so if you are shorter it would be ideal as my mother loved it!

Of course i will promote Exselle and Ideal !!! Remember with Ideal saddles in particular you can have them made with smaller flaps bigger flaps more forward cut striaghter cut bigger blocks smaller blocks velcro blocks bigger panels deeper gussets etc etc the list goes on - you just have to find the tree that suits G then build your saddle around it really!! I do like the Integra II from Exselle but currently ride in Ideal Springbok 350 these are both CC but i do have long legs.
The main thing is to make sure it fits G, i know Prestige and other continental type CC sometimes aren't good for pressure distribution on the horse.
Ideal are launching some new models, and pimping some older ones too, the 350 CC is one of them......
Hope that helps!!

Depends how straight you want the saddle.
My farringtons WHP saddle is brilliant and ive been xc on a sucidal pony in it with no problems. However it does double as a show saddle so is quite straight cut to show off the shoulder. Never had a problem jumping in it, and i do know of several people who go hunting in thiers (i wouldnt dare take my pony i might end up dead
as he can be a lunatic)

QR I have short stumpy legs too! I absolutely adore my Ideal Pro Event Saddle. It is incredibly comfortable, fits me to a T (luckily horse as well who is quite big and broad but with high withers!). I use it everyday incl hunting, jumping and dressage but at a very much lower standard than you!

I am 5'2 and use a pessoa jumpin saddle, find it really good for keeping contact with the horse. I use it on frankie (see below) but also SJ woody (2nd pic) in one and she has a good set of shoulders!

(10 months in foal but you can still see her shoulders)

Hope that helps

Wow, thanks everyone. Lec, I'm not that short, (as you know, you ahve met me
tongue.gif
) but have shortish distance from hip to knee, and so have to be careful where the saddle encourages me to put my knees...as if they creep up, I end up somewhere odd, hence needing something a bit straighter cut...

Cullohill, I LOVE the ideal saddles, but at the mo not sure what my budget will look like

G is pretty easy to fit I am finding, as long as it has a decent gullet for his spinal column, but he is a pretty standard M aslong as has small, preferably sloping backward points. Seems my bates is the main culpret for putting jme at the back of the saddle as is SO forward cut....

Thansk Ravenwood and Conniegirl, Conniegirl i need a "proper" jump saddle as although I dont want a ridiculously forward cut one, I need it enough to jump round decent XC tracks, as aiming to go atleast BE nov eventually.....The ideal pro event is lovely, have been round a PN in one, but need more of a "CC" saddle...thanks though

AimeeC, I had a pessoa for G which I loved, but was a really old rodrigo one. The sadddler wanted silly money for it so I didnt buy it, but had it for a while. The new ones dont seem to fit him aswell

But they are spot on....will try and source one that may fit....

Thanks everyone

I've got a Dever jumping which I love and will never part with. I have no idea what model it is as I bought it second hand a few years ago. I'm 5'2" with short legs and it suits me perfectly as it's not too forward cut. I really don't like my sister's Bates Caprilli (not sure if that's right) as I feel it's too wide for me.

Good luck with your search. I'm going to be looking for a dressage saddle soon and I'm dreading it as I'm really fussy!

Ive got a fieldhouse gfs show jumping one and my legs are super short! It was a fab fit, and my friend who rode my mare who has long legs got on with it well.

I wouldnt part with it, love it to bits. Having said that I bought it over 10 years ago...and it now looks like they have morphed it with the Pessoa.
