Hi all

I have owned my ex race horse for about a year now and although his general straightness as improved and he is far more supple he recently had some box rest and it seems to have highlighted a real problem on his right rein. His work on the left is fine but he falls in terribly on the right, to the point of not wanting to yeild to my right leg even to go on to the track. i have done lots of work to try and controll his shoulders but now i don't know where to go from here. It doesn't seem to be so much of a problem in walk or canter but it's seriously bad in trott. his saddle has been checked and he's booked to see the back man but could it just be that he's not in front of my leg enough in trott? I have taken to riding him in spurs and with schooling whip but still find that my right leg is constantly nagging just to keep on the track. Any ideas?

You do right to get a back person out but I would also have the teeth looked at if you havent for some time. A qualified instructor could also be useful because quite often the lack of straighness is a reflection of lack of rider straightness. You need to rule out all these factors.

I'd actually get someone out to check his saddle rather than a back man (more because I think back people are overrated!). Interestingly a panel on my WOW saddle deflated and my horse went from straight to bent as a banana, so saddles are key to straightness!

Wolf teeth can also make them stiff / odd on one rein.

Then I would investigate your position to see if you are crooked (I collapse on one hip, so easily unbalance a horse).

Thanks guys

Sorry forgot to mention that saddle is made to measure and teeth only just been checked, we did take a blind wolf tooth out over 6 months ago. Pretty sure i'm not crooked but have to say that i realy have to be aware of that the more i ride him, i don't want him to turn me that way. I have three others, another is ex racer and problem hasent arised. i have a realy good instructor but due to a new job havn't seen her on this horse for a while, however got a session booked with her on wednesday night with riding club so hopefully she can give me ideas.

thanks muchly!
