How do you know box rest isnt working, just curious? My mare tore her Deep Digital flexor tendon and box rest and remedial shoeing were the actions we had to follow. What does your vet recommend?
The vet said 3 weeks on box rest would sort hes tendon out as it was very very minute, the vet said if he was shown the scan results and sais would this horse be lame, he would say no, he hasnt had any heat or swelling and he is very slightly lame. He has been on box rest for alot longer then 3 weeks but he isnt 100% sound still. The vet has said he wants him back down to the vets surgery to have a rethink of what to do now and talk about treatment. But i have no idea what treatment can be done?...
my horse did something to his DDFT and to start with he had box rest but then complications arose (lymphangitis) and the vet said to keep him out 24/7, my horse has been out most of this year and also i took him barefoot in may. he is still very slightly lame but nothing major and a sachet of bute helps him out. (although he is now juming out so that won't be helping!).
sorry what i've just said is probably no help to you!
in my horses case i had no other choice but to turn him out, if he stayed in then the risk was too high for him.
he was put in a small (ish) paddock so that he couldn't gallop around but enough to keep him moving. he only had bute on the days he looked lame in walk.
it has worked for my horse but obviously every horse is different. now he's feeling alot better though he's back to jumping out the paddock to be with his mates and better grass so to save him jumping out he's put in with them during the day.
Think you need to get your horse to Horsepital for further investigations. Vet guessed at my horses condition and it was first thought it was the small bone chip in her fetlock that was seen on xray. She had that removed and was still slightly lame. I asked that she go back to surgery and she had an MRI scan, that revealed the tear in her tendon deep within her hoof and it wouldnt have been found any other way. A year off is ok but you will need to consider your Insurance options as most of the companies only hold your claim open for a year. You will not be able to get any treatment once that time is up.
