had this done on their horse? and what were the results, and the outcome of the long term future of the horse?

basically i have a mare, injury not healing, after being let out of box rest it instantaly flaired up (is 5 months old) vet has said it may be the only way forward.

mare is a bsja horse, due to temprement, shes not going to be suitable for anything else.

id really like to here others experiances. good or bad.

Not had experience of a tendon strain, but my mare Miss P aka Patches had surgery to flush out an infected sheath. Would info about that be of any help?

sorry i also re read.. head not with it. so i take it your mare had her tendon sheath flushed out? why?

mines has a strained injury i dont think its the same.

Sorry..that was as bit ambiguous of me.

I didn't think it would be helpful to you, as I'm not sure what surgery you're referring to.

Yes, P had a tendon sheath flushed on her left knee in January 2006. No idea what caused the infection really, although she did have a tiny are on the back of her knee where a scab had recently come away from salanders and malanders.

I was just going to say that she was in a Robert Jones bandage for 3 weeks, then had five weeks of gentle hacking on bute straight from the stable before turnout could be introduced.

She got adhesions after the surgery, as the tendon sheath stuck to the actual tendon causing her pain and restricting her movement. She had to be ridden on bute to help with the pain and break down the adhesions to free up her leg and return her to soundness.

She's fine now. 100% sound in front without any pain meds.

Is vet suggesting debridement of the tendon to encourage it to heal better i.e. making it worse but then it heals more regularly? Vet suggested that for my horse who has torn his DDFT but as he had just had 2 major surgeries in the last 6 months I said no to more surgery.

so what happened next?

Was only diagnosed in January, don't know when injury happened as due to all his other probs he was lame on that leg anyway and was doped up with painkillers.
Anyway I am just giving him time to heal, he goes in a small paddock for an hour or so a day and in the spring will be going out 24/7. See how it goes but from others experiences on here it will take a good long time to heal. Sorry am utterly no help at all to you.
